On this week’s show, the tag team of Bernard and CJ review Noah Baumbach’s latest, Mistress America, starring Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke. The boys also examine the value of modern theatrical “enhancements” like 3-D glasses and 4DX theaters and whether they’re hindering or helping movies as a whole. Plus, there’s a computer program being developed called “Dramatis” that is able to detect points of suspense in a story. Could this be the beginning of a future where computers are writing Hollywood scripts? Bernard and CJ answer that question as well as share their Indie Picks of the week on this especially bromantic edition of the Way Too Indiecast.

Bernard goes it alone in this week’s edition of the Way Too Indiecast, but have no fear: he’s bringing an extra dose of podcast love to the table (and a handful of Glade Plug-Ins, just in case it’s a stinker). Being that he’s Way Too Indie’s resident interviewer, Bernard shares two interview horror stories, one of which involves none other than the illustrious Jason Schwartzman. Plus, he shares his Indie Pick of the Week and asks the question: Is Joss Whedon indie?

So grab a seat at the campfire and join Bernard for some good ol’ indie story time (not because he needs the company; he’s been known to start forest fires and needs supervision)!

“Man fears the darkness, and so he scrapes away at the edges of it with fire.”

Bernard faces his demons on this episode of the Way Too Indiecast as he and Ananda discuss the worldwide phenomenon they’ve somehow managed to stay far, far away from until now: anime. To guide them on their journey through the wonderful world of vampire hunters, giant mechs, and godlike schoolgirls is special guest Ryan Clements, a prominent figure in the video games industry and passionate anime enthusiast. Will Mr. Clements be able to persuade Ananda and Bernard to dive deep into the worlds of Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion?

Also on this nerd-tastic edition of the show, Ananda and Bernard discuss Alex Garland’s stunning sci-fi indie, Ex Machina, which stars Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander. In the film Gleeson and Isaac play a couple of tech geniuses (nerds) who perform experiments on the world’s first true A.I., an adorable robot girl named Ava (Vikander). Could it be the best film of the year so far? Plus, as always, we’ve got some fresh indie picks for you right at the top of the show. So what are you waiting for? Click play and let the waves of nerdy pleasure wash over you.

After skipping last week’s episode to live out his boyhood dreams at WrestleMania, Bernard is back to host this week’s episode of the Way Too Indiecast! (Did he smell what The Rock was cookin’?) Joining him on the show this week is Susan, CJ, and a very special guest: veteran movie critic and writer at Next Projection, Screen Invasion, and Very Aware, Mel Valentin!

This week’s episode is comic book themed, with the crew discussing their favorite and least favorite comic book movies, as well as running down their lists of which comic books would make for great movies but haven’t been adapted yet (Susan suggests a popular “deathly” manga, and Bernard’s got a pick that could reach Terrance Malick levels of beauteousness). Add to all the graphic novel goodness our weekly Indie Picks and you’ve got one hell of a show! On this special edition Way Too Indiecast, we take a quick look back at the five-year history of Way Too Indie as part of our anniversary coverage this month. Our discussion leads us to our humble beginning when our name came to be and just one person was on staff. We continue our retrospective glance back by discussing some late-season 2014 films that are coming out now, including the wonderful Best Foreign Language nominee Wild Tales, an overlooked documentary The Overnighters, and J.C. Chandor’s excellent A Most Violent Year. Plus, we catch Bernard off-guard when he can’t remember a film he just reviewed for the site (hint: it was the unimpressive The Lazarus Effect).

The Academy finally announced their Oscar nominations for 2015, and they certainly created a lot of controversy. On this edition of the Way Too Indiecast, editor-in-chief Dustin Jansick sits down with C.J. Prince to discuss the most interesting and surprising nominees. To usher in the new year we’ve got a brand new episode of the Way Too Indiecast fresh out of the oven! In this episode Dustin, Ananda, and Bernard take a look back at 2014, a somewhat sleepy year for movies, though if you dig a little deeper (and we do), you’ll find myriad excellent films that may have slipped out of memory, and a seminal film from an indie great that will be remembered for many years to come. There was also a little, controversial movie called The Interview (you may have heard of it) that may have altered the landscape of film distribution for the foreseeable future. Stay tuned for the second half of the show, in which the gang makes their predictions for this weekend’s Golden Globe Awards. 2015 is going to be Way Too Indie’s best year ever, and we’re excited to have you along for the ride!

Halloween is right around the corner, and some of us at Way Too Indie are super excited about it. On this episode of the Way Too Indiecast site writers C.J. Prince, Ananda Dillon and Blake Ginithan talk about the scariest things we’ve ever seen. To start things off, we get into our favorite horror movies of all-time, a list that includes ghosts, vampires, and crazy Italian witches. After that we discuss some of the most terrifying scenes we’ve watched in our lifetime (Ananda still can’t get over her horrifying experience watching a certain horror movie when she was 11-years-old!). Finally, we list some horror villains that didn’t make the cut in our 10 Scariest Horror Movie Villains feature.

Because Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice had its premiere at the New York Film Festival and David Fincher’s Gone Girl is dominating local theaters, we can finally talk about two of our most anticipated films of 2014. We talk specifics about the baffling Inherent Vice and begin Gone Girl‘s conversation spoiler-free before we go into any details or spoilers (don’t worry, we hold our spoiler talk at the end, at the 32 minute mark, and give you plenty of warnings beforehand). While both of these films are the most talked about of the NYFF lineup, we discuss other notable films of the festival, including one destined to make a splash at this year’s Independent Spirit Awards.

While the summer’s biggest blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy continues to woo audiences, the film divides our panel in our very first episode of the Way Too Indiecast. On the surface, this multi-million dollar budget comic book movie from Marvel seems anything but indie, but director James Gunn got his start in low-budget B-Movie productions. Which leads into our second topic, indie directors breaking into mainstream movies. We discuss how directors like Rian Johnson, Christopher Nolan, Darren Aronofsky, and others have handled the transition from small indie productions to major blockbuster franchises.
