Our staff at Way Too Indie compiled a list of the Best 50 Movies that came out between 2010 and 2014. These films mess with our heads, expand our imagination, push the art form forward, fill up our hearts, and then rip them out for good measure. And for all this, we’ll love and cherish them for years to come. Here’s to an amazing first half of the decade, and to an even better next five years.

Drive indie movie

Drive

(Dir. Nicolas Winding Refn, 2011)

I remember walking out of the theater one hot and muggy September night in Toronto after experiencing Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. I really didn’t care for it. Maybe it was the hype. I saw it again. And again. And again. It’s now one of my favorite films (when we made our individual lists that this list was culled from, I had it at number one). Refn’s film is colorfully bold. It’s loud. It’s vibrant. It’s violent. And it’s just so much goddamn fun. Ryan Gosling had a breakout year in 2011 and one of the reasons was this pseudo-Euro-pop-western set in the modern day metropolitan jungle of Los Angeles. Gosling plays a man with no name (wink-wink) who works at a body shop by day, but at night masquerades as a driver for hire whom criminals pay good money to extract their cohorts from robberies and other odd jobs. When one of these jobs goes wrong and a woman he is smitten with is put in danger, he reacts swiftly and violently. Refn won the Best Director prize at Cannes where the film premiered, and now four years later I’m sad it’s not universally loved. Drive is a pulsating work. Everyone involved is at the top of their game, especially Gosling, who here announced himself as one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars. [Blake]

Inception

Inception

(Dir. Christopher Nolan, 2010)

Still a staple in film critics’ conversations since it’s inception into celluloid (I had to), Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi heist thriller won over our hearts and minds with it’s wig-out-worthy concept of dream hacking. Winning Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects, this epic sensory roller coaster garnered acclaim among critics and the box office, grossing over $800 million internationally. With incredible performances by an indomitable cast including Leonardo Dicaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Michael Caine, Marion Cotillard, and Tom Hardy, it’s no wonder this film is likely to go down as one of the best in the century, let alone the decade. Personally, I think any movie that gives us an opportunity to experience that which is Lukas Haas is a winner. And who wasn’t holding onto their butts for the funhouse-like fight scene as they tumbled through the spinning hallway? It is rare that we see something that is not a recreation, adaptation, revision, or remake in Hollywood and it is always refreshing when a new concept is able to reawaken that ever sleeping giant that is our imagination. Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook

(Dir. David O. Russell, 2012)

One of the most charming, lovable and painfully honest depictions of mental illness I have ever seen in cinema, Silver Linings Playbook is a bona fide gem and a modern classic of the genre. Pat and Tiffany, our main characters, embark upon a journey that, for most others, would be a Hollywood cliché. But it has to be acknowledged from the beginning that these two are not most other characters. They do not act the way we expect them to; they live the way they expect themselves to. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence provide stunning performances, demanding to be taken seriously whilst at the same time being entirely aware of the comedy they inspire. Perhaps this is key to understanding the characters themselves though—just a few scenes into the film we can tell that they are walking contradictions. Pat could genuinely be described as an optimistic pessimist. Tiffany seems to be both intrusive and elusive. In much the same way, Silver Linings Playbook couldn’t possibly be described as an ordinary romcom—not because it subverts the genre, but because it so thoroughly surmounts it. [Pavi]

Holy Motors

(Dir. Leos Carax, 2012)

After his 1999 film, Pola X, ended up a disastrous financial failure, the peculiar French director Leos Carax recoiled into seclusion to lick his wounds. Aside from his contribution to the Tokyo! triptych of films in 2008, he hadn’t filmed anything for the public for over a decade, which turned the Holy Motors premiere at Cannes, in 2012, into an arthouse event and a triumphant return of a beloved film lover and emphatic romantic at heart. Working with his most trusted collaborator, Denis Lavant (who turns in an Oscar-worthy performance), Carax sets Holy Motors in a cinephile’s wet dream fantasy land, where a man pops in and out of various characters, various stages of film history, and multiple storylines revolving around love, loss, family, and coming home. It plays out concurrently as a love letter to everything that has inspired Carax as a filmmaker, and an elegy to the current state of an art dominated by technology and profit. Some have called it pretentious, some WTI staffers didn’t care for it, but the majority of us beg to differ (personally, it’s my second favorite film of the decade so far). By delving into the personal, Carax has made something enchantingly universal, where even the space between the frames captivates and celebrates cinema as poetry. At times hilarious, at times frightening, always passionate, Holy Motors is watching magic conjured on screen by a magician in love with creation itself. [Nik]

Before Midnight movie

Before Midnight

(Dir. Richard Linklater, 2013)

Before Midnight, Richard Linklater’s third entry in his widely adored Before romance series, trades in Before Sunrise’s twenty-something charm and Before Sunrise’s lost-lover flirtation for mid-life fatigue and melancholy. As the loquacious Jesse and Celine, now together for several years and with children, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are as verbally adept and compatible on screen as ever, but here they’re given decidedly heavier material than the previous entries in the series (a nine-year gap in between each), tasked with telling a story not about finding love, but about not letting it slip through your fingers. Shot on the stunning Greek isles, the film keeps in tradition with its predecessors, following Jesse and Celine as they flirt and chat and bicker (mostly bicker) walking down country lanes and driving down winding roads. The sense of dread that this may be the end for the once lovestruck couple, especially for those who’ve come to love the characters over the years, hangs over the movie like a dark cloud. Do they have it in them to stick together for another nine years? Before Midnight is so damn good you can’t help but want to see how it’ll all pan out come 2022. [Bernard]

The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel

(Dir. Richard Linklater, 2014)

We’ve only yet had a year to appreciate this one (though we’re not the only ones as it took home four of the Academy’s Oscars this year), but it seems safe to say that The Grand Budapest Hotel will live on to see Best of the Decade lists five years from now. Indeed, Wes Anderson is likely to have this one attached to his name as one of the greatest of all his works, no matter what he goes on to achieve. Bombastic? Perhaps, but let’s just remember Anderson had another film out in the past five years (Moonrise Kingdom) and it didn’t make this list at all. The endearing story of a revered concierge at a mountaintop hotel and his growing friendship with devoted lobby boy, Zero, is told through Anderson’s unique and fantastical lens. Together they gallivant through diorama-like settings, each frame of the film a meticulously crafted scene out of Anderson’s colorful mind. While Anderson has a great many films under his belt, The Grand Budapest Hotel gleams as his best yet to pair his idiosyncratic imagination with likable and intricate characters. He hit new depth with this film, even with all its witty diversions. In fact I’d say it’s every wacky puzzle piece that makes the overall picture that much more splendid. [Ananda]

Birdman movie

Birdman

(Dir. Alejandro G. Iñárritu, 2014)

Winner of the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography as well as Golden Globes for Best Screenplay and Best Actor in 2014, Birdman will sit solidly on our list making it strongly probable that it will remain in the Top 50 for the rest of the decade. Made to look like it was filmed in one continuous shot, there were actually at least 16 (visible) cuts. The actors had to memorize up to 15 pages of lines at a time while also landing on all of the choreographed marks set for the scenes. With this in mind, the performances of Edward Norton, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts, were brilliant. The anticipation of seeing how Michael Keaton would play this out was almost more than I could bear, however. Four years since his last movie role and playing a part that seemed like it could truly be a glimpse into his real life, being an ex-superhero, one couldn’t help but await witnessing his artistry. And he did not disappoint. I think there has never been a doubt that Keaton has some mad acting skills, it’s just so nice to be able to experience it any time we can. We want more. [Scarlet]

The LEGO movie

The Lego Movie

(Dir. Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, 2014)

Directed and co-written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Warner Animation Group hadn’t produced a film since 2003’s Looney Tunes: Back in Action. Released to critical and commercial acclaim, The Lego Movie was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Animated feature and an Oscar and Grammy for Best Original Song, “Everything is Awesome.” While it didn’t win any of those, it did win 48 other awards including the BAFTA award for Best Animated Film, as well as the Critic’s Choice Movie Award for Best Animated Feature. Its popularity was so great, actually, that there was a shortage of LEGO products in September. The animators paid such close attention to detail that only bricks from the official LEGO Brick Library were used to construct everything—with the exception of President Business’ hair and evil helmet—in the Lego universe. Amazingly, not once does the film mention the word “LEGO.” Characters were voiced by some of the industry’s biggest comics, most notably Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, and Nick Offerman, among many others. In fact, this was the first time Morgan Freeman had voiced an animated character. It was so successful that two spin-off films are already in the works as well as a sequel planned for a 2018 release. Which is just plain awesome. [Scarlet]

Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas

(Dir. Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski, 2012)

Produced independently for over $100 million (one of the highest-budgeted indies of all-time), Cloud Atlas was doomed to fail from the beginning. With Lana & Andy Wachowski (whose previous film, Speed Racer, flopped hard) co-directing alongside Tom Tykwer to adapt a dense, structurally ambitious novel, all signs pointed to a bust. When Cloud Atlas finally came out, audiences rejected it wholeheartedly, but some people (including more than a few of us here) saw something amazing. Sure, Cloud Atlas has its flaws (no one’s going to defend those make-up effects), but it more than makes up for them with sheer ambition. Comprising of six stories ranging from the 1800’s to centuries in the future, Cloud Atlas shows how one act of defiance against oppression can inspire a revolution centuries later. And despite being an adaptation within the world of Hollywood tentpoles, Cloud Atlas is wholly original, the sort of film that should be championed rather than disparaged. The Wachowskis–whose follow-up Jupiter Ascending suffered a similar fate as this film–are some of the most earnest, daring and original filmmakers working on a large scale today, their films teeming with more ideas than an entire phase of Marvel films. Give Cloud Atlas a chance, and it may surprise you. [CJ]

Upstream Color

Upstream Color

(Dir. Shane Carruth, 2013)

Eight years after he left audiences stunned and stumped with the sci-fi mind-fuck Primer, Shane Carruth returned out of nowhere with an ambitious and equally confusing film called Upstream Color. Perhaps he kept such a low-profile because he was so busy; he directed, produced, acted, shot, edited, scored, and even distributed Upstream Color. Trying to decipher the logic behind the film is challenging by design. As the story unfolds, two strangers develop an unexplainable connection when they begin to see each other’s memories, and eventually their memories mesh together, making it difficult to distinguish which memories came from who. Carruth creates this disorienting dream-like state by combining frequent narrative jumps and fragmented dialog. Adding to the film’s strangeness, the two characters also experience a bizarre physical and spiritual connection to nature through organisms such as blue orchids, worms, and pigs. Like a surrealist painting, Upstream Color is open for interpretation and practically dares you to only look at it once. [Dustin]

We are only 23 days away from hearing the winners of the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards so I thought I would give a shot at predictions who those winners will be. The Spirit Awards are a little be harder to predict than the Oscars because they do not tend to follow as many patterns nor does it have as wide of an audience. This year has a chance to be closer to the outcome of the Oscars than any other year with The Artist being the favorite at both shows. Christopher Plummer and A Separation also could be set to win both a Spirit Award and Oscar. In addition to picking the winners for each category I gave some insight as to why in the “Notes” section under the categories.

Tune in on Saturday February 25th to IFC and see how well I did (or did not do).

NOTES:
I would be completely shocked if The Artist did not win as it seems like the strongest of the bunch. However, you have to go all the back to 1987 for the winner of this category to be the same film that wins Best Picture at the Oscars. Since it is the front runner to win the Oscar, history may repeat itself and some other film may win. If that were the case, I think Drive has a good chance as well as The Descendants.
Best Director:

NOTES:
This is tricky because the winner of Best Director is typically the same as the Best Feature. So if you get one wrong you will probably get both wrong. I am sticking with The Artist (Michel Hazanavicius) as the frontrunner with Alexander Payne for The Descendants as my second pick.

My bets are on Martha Marcy May Marlene winning this award. Natural Section did win at SXSW Film Festival and Another Earth won awards at the Sundance Film Festival so they have pretty good odds of winning as well. Margin Call is already taking home the Robert Altman Award so I think their recognition ends with that.
Best Male Lead:

I think this will be close between Michelle Williams (who will probably not be taking home an Oscar this year) and Elizabeth Olsen (who was not nominated for an Oscar). I am picking Michelle Williams, who lost last year’s award to Natalie Portman.
Best Supporting Male:

NOTES:
Being that Christopher Plummer is pretty much a lock to win the Oscar, it only seems fitting he will win a Spirit Award as well. Albert Brooks is the definite dark horse here. John Hawkes won this exact award last year so I doubt he would get it two years in a row. I am glad to see Corey Stoll get the nomination for Midnight In Paris but there is little chance he will win.
Best Supporting Female:

NOTES:
I believe Shaileen Woodley will pick up the one of my predicted two awards for The Descendants. Although, I will be rooting for Jessica Chastain to win for not only her role in Take Shelter, but she has a terrific year for her roles in The Tree of Life and The Help.

The Kid With A Bike – Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne

NOTES:
2007 was the last time that the same film won an Independent Spirit Award and an Oscar for this category. A Separation is pretty much a given that it will win the Oscar but with contending films like Melancholia and Shame that is tough to say here. Both of those films were robbed of any Oscar nominations so it would be nice to see them get a win here. I thought hard about this and ended up going with A Separation to win but I think Melancholia has a shot for the reasons above.
Best Cinematography:

Darius Khondji – Midnight In Paris
Guillaume Schiffman – The Artist

NOTES:
It is tough to go against The Artist in any category this year but I am going with my gut that Darius Khondji will win for Midnight In Paris. This category is only a race between those two.

NOTES:
It would be a shame if 50/50 went home empty handed especially since the host this year is Seth Rogen who co-stars in the film. Based on real life events of Will Reiser I think he will take home the award for this. The Sundance standout Another Earth may also have a decent shot.

The nominations for the 2012 Oscars were announced this morning with Hugo leading the pack for the 84nd Academy Awards with 11 nominations. The Artist came in as a close second with 10 nominations including; Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Score. This is the first year with the new Best Picture rule, no longer is there a set number of Best Picture nominations, instead a film needs to get 5% of votes get a nomination. The new rule is a great change. This year still ended up with 9 films, a few more than I expected.

Perhaps the biggest surprises were The Tree Of Life getting nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, which I am glad that film is getting some love from the Academy. Other shocker is Michael Fassbender not getting a nomination for Best Actor for his role in Shame, shame on you Academy. Tilda Swinton comes up empty for Best Actress for We Need To Talk About Kevin. But some good news, Gary Oldman received his very first Oscar nomination which makes a lot of people happy.

Nicholas Winding Refn’s Drive is a gloriously brutal love letter to action movies of the 70’s, featuring a lead character that doesn’t even have a name, a fantastic synth-pop score and soundtrack and very well stage action set pieces. Drive is one of the best films of the year. Not even wasting a second to get started, the film opens with a fantastic scene involving our hero at work as he drives two thugs to a warehouse somewhere in L.A.

Our hero is quickly put to the test when the cops catch a whiff of his trail. Showing exceptional driving skills he leads his fare out of trouble. Refn then throws out the style. Bold, bright, italicized Pink colored credits accompanied by a slow pulsating pop song with way too much swag leads us through a night drive in L.A. with The Driver.

The Driver (with no name) is played by Ryan Gosling who is this year’s it boy for film. The guy has been around for years but it seems like this is his year to break out, and boy what a film to do it in. Gosling plays the driver as a quiet, cool and calculating young man who mostly stays to himself. But don’t be fooled. His Driver explodes with intense rage when pushed to the limits. Probably the most famous scene from the movie is proof of this as he is forced to protect the girl he is smitten with.

The girl is played by Carrie Mulligan who probably couldn’t be any cuter if she tried. She lives in the same building on the same floor as our hero. He soon forms a kinship with Mulligan and her young son. We find out that her husband is in jail and will soon be released. This doesn’t faze Gosling. When her husband is released, he almost immediately gets in to trouble with his crew. Gosling offers to help for one time and one time only.

Up until this point, the movie has been pretty tame. There are some moments of uneasiness, but nothing quite boils over. That is until Gosling ‘s offer to help. Gosling offers his services as a driver for Mulligan’s husband on one last job. The job goes completely awry and from here on out the movie is on fire. Along with the brutal elevator scene, Refn stages an unbelievably violent set piece in a hotel.

The first time I saw Drive at the Toronto International Film Festival, the audience was cheering and whistling when the hotel scene reached its apex. I’m not a champion of violence, but when something is done right I know it’s worth applauding and Refn’s action sequences are a stand up and cheer from the banisters type of effort.

I know every other critic has done this but I must echo their praises, Albert Brooks. What a performance. He’s been funny for decades. Here he plays completely against type and nails it. Here is a three dimensional villan that is so sinister, yet so, I don’t know the word for it. Understanding maybe? He doesn’t want to do the things he has to do, but he knows they are a mean to an end. I can’t wait to see his name called for an Oscar nomination in 2 months.

With all these great stars in Drive, it’s easy to forget that the real star of this film is director Nicholas Winding-Refn. The Danish director has quite the eclectic palate of late. His last 3 features couldn’t be more different. His film Bronson was an intense performance piece by the brilliant Tom Hardy. His film after that Valhalla Rising was a slow esoteric and extremely bloody look at Vikings in the highlands of Europe.

Now comes Drive, his Hollywood breakthrough. A highly stylized and a very confident film that completely stands apart from anything else released this year. Bright and colorful, full of gloss and extreme ire, Drive is a breath of fresh air. I cannot wait to see what Refn does next.

The 2012 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced today by presenters Anthony Mackie and Kate Beckinsale kicking off the award season. Of the total 277 total film submissions The Artist and Take Shelter raked in the most nominations this year with five in total. Close behind them with 4 nominations were films Martha Marcy May Marlene, The Descendants, and Drive. I would say the front-runner for awards this year is The Artist but all of the films above will have a shot of being represented here as well as at the Oscars.

Michelle Williams gets her second nomination Best Female Lead nomination in a row with her role in My Week With Marilyn (last year’s nomination was for Blue Valentine). She was not the one to get a repeat nomination for the second year in a row as John Hawkes also received a nomination for Martha Marcy May Marlene for Best Supporting Male (John Hawkes won the award last year for Winter’s Bone).

In order to qualify for Spirit Awards a film has to be made for under $20 million, which would explain the absence of Tree Of Life among the nominations, which is a little disappointing as it has been my favorite film of 2011 so far (I still have a fair amount to see still though). Although I have not seen them yet, I am a little disappointed that Alps and The Skin I Live In did not make the cut for a nomination in the Best Foreign Film category (need to have at least 1 U.S. producer to qualify for the other awards).

The winners will be announced at the 27th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards on February 25th and the broadcast will air at 10 p.m. ET/PT on IFC.

Day 2 of the Toronto International Film Festival I see The Artist which seems to be getting a lot of buzz right now. I also saw The Hunter starring Willem Dafoe, the North American Premiere of Melancholia which Kirsten Dunst won Best Actress at Cannes. Lastly, I went to a Special presentation screening of Drive. Here are my first impressions and mini reviews of the films.

The Artist

People are going to love this film. People who love film are going to LOVE this film. An ode to Hollywood of the yester years. Terrific performances, amazing black and white cinematography, laughter aplenty. This film is a blast. Telling the story of a silent film actor in Hollywood at the genesis of talkies. The main character George is full of too much pride to realize the change in technology. He soon begins to suffer as his love interest’s fame starts to sky rocket. Together him and his very well trained pooch try to figure out a way to stay in the pictures. It all comes together in a dazzling final 20 minutes. Audiences will chew this one up.

The Hunter

A slow burning Australian film about an American Mercenary (Willem Dafoe) hired by a mysterious European Bio Tech corporation to find the last of the Tasmanian Tigers. A brooding thriller that becomes more about protecting a widow and her children than the hunt itself. Dafoe turns in a good performance as always, the movie itself didn’t really speak to me. It was a little slow in parts and the plot of the film wasn’t that interesting to me. Of course I had Melancholia and Drive to follow, so my mind was kind of elsewhere.

RATING: 6/10
Melancholia

I have only seen one Lars Von Trier film prior to this, his extremely tough to sit through Antichrist (which I actually quite liked). The opening sequence of Melancholia is utterly spectacular. Shots of Kirsten Dunst with electricity coming out of her hands and being stuck in tangled black webs coming from the earth are all shot in a very arty way by Trier. He finishes off the opening sequence with the planet Melancholia crushing Earth and it is as beautiful a shot from any science fiction film I’ve ever seen. If you can see this in a theater I would highly recommend it. The sound system of the Ryerson theater was spectacular. The movie concerns a woman just newly wed at her reception with her absolutely insane family. The second half the film is concentrated on her sister and how she deals with the depression and despair the planet Melancholia brings. The final 20 minutes are brilliant, scary and beautiful all at once. One of the best films I’ve seen so far.

Drive

I was looking forward to Drive probably the second most out of any film at TIFF this year. Nicolas Windig Refn got up before the movie and introduced the cast and talked a little about the movie. The dude is seriously funny as hell. Drive disappointed me. It’s a good movie, but it’s not a great one. It has so much going for it. An incredible style courtesy of Refn, a soundtrack that works very well with the material. Some terrific turns from Bryan Cranston and Albert Brooks. Also, the violence is extremely grisly and well executed. I’m not one to LOVE violence in movie, but when a movie has a good mean streak I to appreciate it. My problems with Drive are these. For starters, the movie starts out with a great story between a lonely shy man and his neighbor who he confides in while her husband is in prison. All of that is built well and all, but once the movie kicks into gear, it feels like the film ditches all those great emotions it created and just goes with pure brutality. And I like said earlier I don’t mind extreme violence but you gotta back that up with some feelings. I felt like Drive didn’t earn them. The second thing I didn’t like about the film was that it kinda wrapped itself up early. The movie could’ve easily added another 15 minutes and would’ve been perfect. Drive was going pretty well until it hit autopilot. It was like the movie realized it was ending soon and just wrapped up it’s plot. Terrific style, terrific score and performances. Just wish it didn’t ditch the heart it was building in the first half and ditch out on what could’ve been a great ending.

Last year the TIFF had 246 films that were part of the festival, which included many world and international premieres. This year's lineup looks to be very promising as it includes the works from; George Clooney, Francis Ford Coppola, Lars von Trier, Morgan Spurlock, Cameron Crowe and Jay & Mark Duplass. The Toronto International Film Festival has started announcing titles of films that will be playing at it’s 36th annual festival held from September 8th – 18th 2011. Last year the TIFF had 246 films that were part of the festival, which included many world and international premieres. This year’s lineup looks to be very promising as it includes the works from; George Clooney, Francis Ford Coppola, Lars von Trier, Morgan Spurlock, Cameron Crowe and Jay & Mark Duplass. This year Way Too Indie’s very own Blake Ginithan will be attending TIFF and will be reporting back his thoughts on it so stay tuned.

There are too many films to list for one article so instead I will list some of the most exciting and big-named films coming to TIFF in 2011.

Films Way Too Indie is most excited for at TIFF ’11 (In no particular order)
The Ides of March (director George Clooney)

Why excited: It stars one of my favorite actors Philip Seymour Hoffman. Speaking of stars it is loaded with them; George Clooney (who also wrote and directed it), Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood.
Synopsis: An idealistic staffer for a newbie presidential candidate gets a crash course on dirty politics during his stint on the campaign trail. Based on the play by Beau Willimon.

Moneyball (director Bennett Miller)

Why excited: Again, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill certainly do not hurt either.
Synopsis: The story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane’s successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players.

The Artist (director Michel Hazanavicius)

Why excited: Not only is it black and white but it is a silent film.
Synopsis: Hollywood, 1927: As silent movie star George Valentin wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion, he sparks with Peppy Miller, a young dancer set for a big break.

Martha Marcy May Marlene (director Sean Durkin)

Why excited: The film is going to be a big mind-fuck. Plus got to love John Hawkes.
Synopsis: Haunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia, a damaged woman struggles to re-assimilate with her family after fleeing an abusive cult.

50/50 (director Jonathan Levine)

Why excited: 50/50 shot of being funny or lame but I enjoy Seth Rogen.
Synopsis: A comedic account of a 27-year-old guy’s cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease.

Melancholia (director Lars von Trier)

Why excited: Any director that gets banned from Cannes is pretty badass. Plus Kirsten Dunst won Prix d’interpretation feminine at Cannes from her role in this film.
Synopsis: Two sisters find their relationship challenged as a nearby planet threatens to collide into the Earth.

Drive (director Nicolas Winding Refn)

Why excited: Looks like it might be a decent action movie.
Synopsis: A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong.

The Skin I Live In (director Pedro Almodóvar)

Why excited: Nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year, this foreign film looks incredible in an artsy kind of way.
Synopsis: A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession.

Take Shelter (director Jeff Nichols)

Why excited: Sounds messed up, in a good way.
Synopsis: Plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, a young husband and father questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm, or from himself.

Jeff, Who Lives at Home (directors Jay and Mark Duplass)

Why excited: Jay and Mark Duplass are amazingly talented indie directors with their own style.
Synopsis: When he leaves his house on a banal errand for his mother, Jeff discovers that the universe might be sending him messages about his destiny.

Headshot (director Pen-ek Ratanaruang)

Why excited: The synopsis sounds very intriguing. Seeing parts of the film upside down sounds brilliant.
Synopsis: Tul, a hitman, is shot in the head during an assignment. He wakes up after a three-month coma to find that he sees everything upside down, literally. Then he meets a girl that turns his world even more upside down. Who was trying to kill him in the first place?

Keyhole (director Guy Maddin)

Why excited: Why not?
Synopsis: Idiosyncratic, cheeky and uncategorizable, the films of Guy Maddin are testaments to the singular vision of a great contemporary cinema artist, and Keyhole may be his boldest film yet. A surreal indoor odyssey of one man, Ulysses Pick (Jason Patric) struggling to reach his wife (Isabella Rosellini) in her bedroom upstairs, this hypnotic dreamlike journey bewilders and captivates.
