Before your favorite film junkie started referring to anything she didn’t like as, “not my tempo,” and before Whiplash chugged its way to 3 Oscar wins, director Damien Chazelle worked on a short version of the Best Picture nominated film in order to help sell investors. That short film ultimately felt quite similar to the movie it helped spawn, so it’s no surprise that Chazelle was able to not only make Whiplash, but make it in a way that closely resembled his first attempt at the story. A YouTube user Username Hype sought to analyze the differences between the short and the feature by syncing footage from the two films side-by-side.

This video provides a glimpse at the ways in which Chazelle was already fully prepared to make his feature. Many of the shots that are perfectly timed to the openings notes of “Whiplash” (the song) appear identical in both the short and feature. Likewise, J.K. Simmons‘ Oscar-winning drill sergeant-like presence is just as intimidating in the short form. A collection of the musicians used for the short re-appear (including C.J. Vana as Metz, the trombonist Fletcher throws out of class on Andrew’s first day); however, a notable diversion is Johnny Simmons (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) as Andrew Neyman rather than Miles Teller. The video provides an interesting study of a director’s choices, as well as the transition a film must undergo as it comes to fruition. Check out the full side-by-side Whiplash short to Whiplash feature comparison video above.

More stupidity ensues as CJ and Bernard churn out another off-topic, meandering, disgraceful episode of Criterion Club. The boys don’t go over Criterion’s September releases at all, instead talking about classic movies they don’t love and playing a “game” in which Bernard tests the validity of CJ’s “Dastardly Dissenter” moniker (which Bernard himself gave him). Also, for some reason, they about the Electronic Entertainment Expo and what games they would put in a video game version of the Criterion Collection.

What were you expecting?

Game of Thrones season 5 is over, and boy are we crushed.

Season finale “Mother’s Mercy” was anything but merciful. Ananda and Bernard were absolutely wrecked by the string of tragic events that unfolded in the episode. It saw the demise of several key characters, though one particularly unexpected and cruel death was the main cause of our hosts’ misery. All bets are off now, as several popular GoT theories bit the dust along with one of the show’s most popular characters.

What did you think of “Mother’s Mercy?” Do you need a drink as bad as we do?

It’s another mashup of The Shining! Well, this one is more a smashing of David Lynch-ian imagery and editing techniques using footage from The Shining. Turns out this horror film classic can actually get a little bit creepier. Although, creepy and weird doesn’t necessarily mean scary.

Those of us who love Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 classic can be grateful for his discretion in not trying to take the film to Lynch-ian levels.

If you want to see what The Shining would be like all blue-tinged and nightmarishly confusing, then by all means press play.

People love creating mashups of Wes Anderson’s unique style with other famous films. And we love to watch them (see the Star Wars/Wes Anderson mashup). For this mashup, editor Steve Ramsden stitched together Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel with Stanley Kubrick’s masterful horror film The Shining. The end result is quite fantastic. Ramsden was able to play around with some of the aspect ratios of the two films, and apply some hue shifting to match Anderson’s pastel color palette. Utilizing similarly framed shots from both films (watch for the tracking shot of Shelley Duvall walking into a room seamlessly blended with Ralph Fiennes walking through the room), Ramsden imagines The Grand Overlook Hotel—giving The Shining a slightly comedic tone, or The Grand Budapest Hotel a darker touch, depending on how you look at it.

Season 5 of Game of Thrones has begun!

“The Wars to Come” was a standard sort of Game of Thrones season kick-off, catching us up with where all our wandering characters are and setting up the season. Way Too Indie writers/editors and Game of Thrones devotees, Ananda Dillon and Bernard Boo, react to the season premiere and predict where they think the season will lead and the fate of the good (and bad) people of Westeros.

A day ahead of its Jan. 28th Sundance Film Festival premiere, the comedy Don Verdean is giving the internet a sneak peek at the upcoming movie. Deadline debuted the Don Verdean clip, featuring two of the film’s stars Sam Rockwell and Danny McBride, as well as Leslie Bibb and Amy Ryan. Don Verdean is the new comedy written & directed Jared Hess and co-written by his brother Jerusha (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre), also boasting the likes of Will Forte and Jemaine Clement in the cast.

Don Verdean is Sam Rockwell, a self-proclaimed biblical archaeologist that gets hired by a local pastor to uncover sacred relics to promote the Christian faith. When Don’s effort become futile, he must launch a comedic cover-up. Don Verdean already sold to Lionsgate ahead of the festival, one of the first entries into Sundance to sell this year.

Today might not quite be Danny McBride’s, “lucky day,” but tomorrow he and everyone behind the new Sundance comedy Don Verdean will premiere their film in Park City, Utah. Watch the Don Verdean movie clip below:

In a year brimming with outstanding performances from leading men (Redmayne, Keaton, Oyelowo, Cumberbatch, Gleeson, Hardy…the list goes on for days), Timothy Spall rose to the top as the best of the best (in my humble opinion) with his career-defining turn as British landscape painter JMW Turner in Mike Leigh’s transcendental biopic, Mr. Turner. Spall’s Turner is a walking contradiction, a boorish, unpleasant-looking man who created some of the most beautiful works of art the world has seen. With guttural groans and bestial snorts Spall manages to reveal the soul of the late artist, creating one of the most fully-realized onscreen characters in years.

In our extended interview with the British actor, we discuss his extensive research process, the difficulty of playing such a contradictory character, Turner’s greatest fear, the art of grunting, the time when he transformed into Turner in front of a frightened bartender, the difference between embodying a character and playing a character, working with Mike Leigh, and much more.

A trailer for the directorial film debut from Alex Garland (writer of Sunshine, 28 Days Later, and the upcoming Halo film) is now up. Looks like Terminator: Genisys won’t be the only robot movie in theaters next year. Coming out next April, Ex Machina stars Domhnall Gleeson as Caleb, an internet programmer who wins a competition to spend a week at an out of the way mountain compound to meet with Oscar Isaac‘s robot scientist Nathan Bateman. Nathan has chosen Caleb to test his latest AI specimen, Ava, played by Alicia Vikander (with some Her-like smooth talking).

From there it looks like this ultra intelligent, and emotionally cognitive, robot messes with the minds of the men as Caleb tests (falls in love with) her. The movie looks to be filled with some great technicolored tension.

As more audiences get to experience the bold technical achievements of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s latest endeavor Birdman (read our review), a Vimeo user name Gwen Stacy has released some intriguing behind-the-scenes footage of the film’s cast and crew assembling their new film. The footage, which includes actors Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan, and Edward Norton as well as Iñárritu & the film’s cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, gives viewers an interesting glimpse at the production process on Birdman both in rehearsal and in production.

Aside from the chance to witness the much-discussed steadicam long shots in action, much of this footage includes Iñárritu mapping out shots with the Oscar-winning Lubezki, including a section on the street where the movie’s dynamic Birdman action sequence (from the trailers) takes place. Watch the clip below for Michael Keaton trying on the Birdman suit, Lubezki using an iPhone to shoot a moment from early in the film, and two Mexican filmmakers speaking excitedly in accented English.

Legendary Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono blew audiences away last year at TIFF (where we first saw it) with his insanely wild film Why Don’t You Play in Hell?, which he describes as “an action film about the love of 35mm.” This self-aware genre exploitation movie is based on a screenplay he wrote nearly fifteen years ago about an amateur film crew who earn an opportunity to film a live yakuza battle to the death. Filled with laughs, action, extreme violence, and general outrageousness, Why Don’t You Play in Hell? is often compared to the work of Quentin Tarantino. Watch the trailer below to see for yourself just how ridiculous (in the best way possible) the film looks.

Why Don’t You Play in Hell? will hit theaters and VOD on November 7th.

As we emerge on the other side of the long film festival season and move into awards season, Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash has been drumming up (sorry) so much good publicity that it isn’t crazy to think the 29-year-old filmmaker may be holding his first golden statue in a few months time. About an aspiring jazz drummer (Miles Teller) and his relentless, reprehensible teacher (J.K. While in San Francisco for the Mill Valley Film Festival, I spoke with Damien about pummeling audiences into submission with drum solos; Teller and Simmons’ performances; films being too narrative-focused; what he’s doing next, and more. Check the full interview out below!

Premiering in Toronto with mostly positive reviews, St. Vincent is about a bum (played by the one and only Bill Murray) who becomes an unlikely mentor for his neighbor’s son. The recently released clip doesn’t have any major plot details and instead is a nice stand-alone one-take sequence with Murray, lounging in his front yard, singing along to Bob Dylan’s “Shelter from the Storm.” These two-and-a-half minutes tell us pretty much all we need to know about Vincent in a delightful little package.

Lars von Trier has always been a controversial filmmaker, and his latest film, Nymphomaniac, had a controversial release to match. In most parts of the world, Nymphomaniac was released in two separate 2-hour volumes, though it was initially made as a 5-and-a-half hour epic.

For those who saw the original two-parter and were either dismayed by the idea that these were two separate films or just didn’t get enough, an extended “director’s cut” of the film was released today on VOD in the United States, Canada and several other countries.

Film purists who demand to see the complete and original vision from film directors are in luck, though perhaps von Trier is giving us more than we bargained for — the director’s cut is known to have much more controversial content than its theatrical release, including awkward relations between Jo and her father, an abortion scene, and even more talk of fly fishing.

As technology has grown, the way we connect with people has as well. Once the internet became widespread, like-minded people who may never have met before had an open space to interact. This has led to many positive experiences (myself included), but there will always be a trouble distance and anonymity when two strangers find each other on the interweb. Zacahry Wigon‘s debut feature The Heart Machine uses this backdrop for a different kind of romance film.

The Heart Machine stars John Gallagher Jr. (The Newsroom, Short Term 12) and Kate Lyn Sheil You’re Next as two young people who meet online and strike a long-distance web relationship. As their romance blooms, however, Cody begins to realize that his girlfriend may not be telling him the truth about who she is and where she lives.

We saw the film during its debut during SXSW and called it an exhilarating ride towards uncovering the truth. Be sure to check out the The Heart Machine‘s official trailer below. The film opens on October 24.

It’s getting close to October, so that means the onslaught of horror films is about to begin. There will be plenty of scary movies to keep an eye out for in the coming weeks, but there’s one we’re quite excited to see. Jennifer Kent‘s debut feature The Babadook premiered way back in January at Sundance to a surprising amount of raves. And ever since it scared the crap out of audiences around the world through its tour on the festival circuit, we’ve been anxious for IFC Midnight to finally unleash it on the public.

Well it looks like that time is near, with IFC releasing a trailer for The Babadook today. Be sure to watch the creepy trailer below. The Babadook comes out in theatres and VOD on November 28th.

Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both.

When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son’s behaviour, is forced to medicate him.

But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.

We have an exclusive clip of the first 10 minutes of The Calling, the new serial killer thriller starring Susan Sarandon and Topher Grace.

Sarandon plays Hazel Micallef, a detective in a quiet town who comes across a chain of gruesome murders with spiritual undertones. This is the first feature film from Jason Stone, who is most notable as a co-screenwriter of the Seth Rogan & Evan Goldberg apocalyptic comedy This Is the End. The Calling obviously takes on a much different tone with its sadistic killings in a serene location. Here is the official synopsis:

Detective Hazel Micallef hasn’t had much to worry about in the sleepy town of Fort Dundas until a string of gruesome murders in the surrounding countryside brings her face to face with a serial killer driven by a higher calling.

The Calling is available to rent or own on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube and your favorite streaming services.

The trailer features little of the Rushmore star, instead focusing on the people in Philip’s life and their predominantly antagonistic words for him. Elisabeth Moss co-stars as Philip’s photographer girlfriend Ashley, stating in the teaser, “honestly sometimes you’re impossible to live with.” The cast also includes Krysten Ritter, Jess Weixler, Joséphine de La Baume and Jonathan Pryce.

After premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Listen Up Philip makes its Brazilian, Canadian, and British debuts at the Rio de Janiero International Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival, and London Film Festival, respectively. It will also play the New York Film Festival before its upcoming limited release, scheduled for October 17th. The movie will also be available through iTunes on October 21st.

J.C. Chandor‘s first two films, Margin Call and All Is Lost couldn’t have been more different — the first was a talky, smart depiction of Wall Street’s collapse and the second a quiet, small-scale tale of one man’s survival. For his third film, A Most Violent Year, Chandor is taking a look at the lives of an immigrant family in New York City during the crime-filled winter of 1981.

A Most Violent Year is now set for a December 31, 2014 release in New York and Los Angeles, before expanding in early 2015. The release puts it in prime contention for this year’s wide-open Oscar races — though Chandor’s films have arguably under-performed with the Academy, the film sports a great cast (Jessica Chastain, Oscar Isaac, David Oyelowo and Albert Brooks) and Chandor will most likely be considered for original screenplay.

The film will be released by A24 Films, which has only existed since 2013 but has quickly become a hotspot for daring indie films. The company is most notable for Spring Breakers, Obvious Child and Under the Skin.

While we wait to hear much more about the film in the coming weeks, check out the first trailer for A Most Violent Year below:

Because their self-involvement knows no end, Bernard and CJ have found another excuse to grace your computer and mobile screens with their mangy mugs to talk about the Criterion Collection in the inexplicable second installment of Criterion Club.

In this month’s episode, your woefully underprepared hosts discuss Criterion’s freshly-announced December releases, Bernard embarrasses himself by butchering the name of a great actress, CJ embarrasses himself by admitting to only having seen one Kurosawa film and, overwhelmed by the deluge of shame and guilt, they manage to pass the humiliation along to a third party…

The New York Film Festival made a splash earlier this year when it was that they would hold the premieres of both David Fincher’s Gone Girl and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice. Beyond those films, the festival will also feature some favorites from Sundance, Cannes & Toronto including Whiplash, Two Days, One Night, Mr. Turner, Foxcatcher, and their closing night film Birdman. In the festival’s newly released trailer, fans get a glimpse of the complete lineup in a sleek minute-long clip.

Notably, the preview has quick looks at the first footage released from P.T. Anderson’s hotly anticipated new film Inherent Vice. While some images from the movie have been released, there are three shots (one of Joaquin Phoenix lighting up at 0:05, another of cops knocking over Phoenix at 0:41, and the last with Owen Wilson and several large pizzas at 0:51) which will certain pique the interest of any Magnolia fan.

Following 2000’s Songs from the Second Floor and 2007’s You, the Living, Swedish filmmaker Roy Andersson‘s long gestated project A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence has arrived to complete his trilogy, “about being a human being.” The film had its premiere earlier this month at the Venice Film Festival, where it took home the festival’s Golden Lion award for Best Film. It went on to run in the 2014 Toronto Film Festival; however, the film has no announced plans for distribution outside of Scandinavia.

Pigeon is a series of loosely connected vignettes about existence that range from wildly hilarious to bleakly depressing. Primarily tracking two novelty item salesman Sam (Nisse Vestblom) and Jonathan (Holger Andersson) as they move throughout Gothenberg attempting to, “help people have fun,” Andersson’s sketches largely involve these ineffectual salesman or occur while they bare witness.

At the precipice of the Algerian War between France and Algerian independence fighters, a reserve soldier for the French military, living in Algeria as a schoolteacher (Viggo Mortensen), is enlisted to escort a prisoner (Reda Kateb) on a two-day trek to Tanguit to stand trial. Shot in expansive rocky deserts of Morocco, writer/director David Oelhoffen’s second feature film (following In Your Wake) is a story of survival adapted from the Albert Camus short story “The Guest.”

After debuting at the Venice Film Festival, Loin des Hommes, or Far From Men, made its North American debut this week during the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.

In addition to Jauja, Loin des Hommes is one of two French-language dramas playing at TIFF with Viggo Mortensen in the lead role; however, in Oelhoffen’s film, Mortensen speaks some Spanish and both speaks and writes Arabic for a brief stretch showing off the breadth of his linguistic skills.

French distributor Pathé owns the French distribution rights without current plans for an international release.

A Jewish boy named Srulik fights to survive as he evades Nazis in wartime Poland, posing as a Christian named Jurek. Run Boy Run, Oscar-winning filmmaker Pepe Danquart‘s wartime odyssey, is a childhood adventure that doesn’t attempt to shield us from the traumas of war that surround its hero. Srulik encounters a number of characters on his journey of survival–some helpful, some harmful–and suffers more than his fair share of horrors, enduring what most men could not. His faith, mettle, and identity as a Jew are tested. The film is an adaptation of Uri Orlev’s 2000 novel of the same name, based on the real life events of Yoram Fridman. It was a standout film at the 2014 San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, and it’s garnered rousing ovations on the festival circuit.

While in San Francisco, Danquart spoke with us about casting identical twins to play Srulik (and being a twin himself), not wanting to make a typical holocaust film, the importance of laughter in desperate times, targeting young audiences, working with only natural light

Releasing this Friday, Ira Sachs‘ Love is Strange is a ballad of two lovers named Ben and George (played by John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, respectively) who, when forced to sell of their NYC apartment due to George losing his job, find themselves lost in a world unfamiliar. Ben is taken in by his nephew (Darren Burrows), his wife (Marisa Tomei), and his teenage son (Charlie Tahan), while George moves in with two cops (Manny Perez and Cheyenne Jackson), who live downstairs from the old apartment. The old fellows have a difficult time adjusting to their new environments, but at the end of the day, they know they can always find peace within their love for one another.

We spoke with Sachs in San Francisco about the film’s optimistic take on romance, Lithgow and Molina falling in love on set, the beauty of Chopin, the cyclical nature of love, “human” camera lenses, his experience in independent filmmaking, and more. Check out excerpts from the interview below, with the full clip at the bottom.

Do you know what Anosmic means? It’s not a common word to read while browsing the web, but it surely caught my attention. Anosmic or Anosmia is the inability to perceive odor. I’d tell you how many people have this condition, but there is not any clear data for it. What I can tell you though, is that Alex Wright of The Wax Girl is one of those people. I can also tell you that his debut EP is titled Anosmic.

Alex, a Canadian based post-rock/ambient producer released Anosmic earlier this month. The five track EP at first struck me as something to just unwind to, but after listening to it repeatedly, each track now stands as a piece of an ongoing story. Even with a mellow tone, tracks like Departure make you want to get up and get things done.

The EP starts out with the track Consciousness, an open invitation to start an exploration into this world that Alex has crafted. Leading into two of the tracks that have gotten the most play counts from me; Broken Space and Unknown Location. Both differ in their style, but what’s unique is the use of synths and drums to create an atmosphere of calm and almost eerie peace. We finish out with Departure, which first seemed to be the end of the EP because of the uplifting appeal, but then comes Sleep Disorders, a track for which I have no words other than “Great”. With a strong debut like this, I cannot wait for more. Alex’s composition for these tracks make it easy to interpret multiple stories from the album, depending on the listener, and its tales are unforgettable.

This EP is just the start of great things to come from Alex, a music video is expected later this year and a full-length debut album from The Wax Girl next year. In the meantime, check out the album after the video below. Like always, I recommend you listen to it all in one sitting.

We got to chat with Alex a few hours before the album’s release for our Music Hangout Series. Wondering what The Wax Girl has to do with anything? All the answers you need in the video below.

You can grab the EP over at The Wax Girl’s Bandcamp page or on iTunes – Twenty percent of proceeds from both the digital & physical copies goes to Raising the Roof – a Canadian organization that provides strong and effective national leadership on long-term solutions to homelessness.

With Timecrimes and Extraterrestrial, Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo has proven to be one of the most original voices in modern sci-fi and horror (his short featured in The ABC’s of Death was also a highlight). Now you can check out the new trailer for his upcoming film Open Windows, which we reviewed for its SXSW premiere.

Open Windows stars Elijah Wood as an obsessed fan, who gets the chance to watch his favorite actress (played by Sasha Grey) via a secret webcam. When Jill Goddard is kidnapped, Nick becomes wrapped up in a fast-paced cat-and-mouse thriller.

The hook to Open Windows is how the film is shot, which can be seen in the trailer. The majority of the film is shown in real-time, using webcam and desktop interfaces in place of a traditional camera. Vigalondo has shown a smart sense of technology in his previous films, so rest assured that Open Windows will be more than just a gimmick and will use the technology in bold new ways.

Open Windows will be available on VOD on October 2 and in theaters on November 7.

Director Céline Sciamma‘s third film may be titled Bande de filles (Band of Girls) in its native language (French), but it’s English language title is Girlhood, which is sure to cause some confusion with Richard Linklater’s recent film Boyhood. In Girlhood, the filmmaker (Water Lilies, Tomboy) directs her own script starring Karidja Touré, Assa Sylla, Lindsay Karamoh, and Mariétou Touré. Described as a raw portrayal of the lives of a group of black high school girls in a tough part of Paris, the movie follows Marieme (Karidja) as she reinvents herself after falling in with a new group of friends.

After making its debut as part of the Director’s Fortnight at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Girlhood was picked up for U.S. distribution by Strand Releasing. Girlhood will make its North American debut at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, before its October 20th release in France and subsequent domestic release sometime in 2015.

Battling lymphoma and facing his own mortality, Clark Wang prepares to make his last act a gift to the planet and undergoing a “green funeral”. Chances are you’re thinking, “What even is a green funeral?” Filmmakers Amy Browne, Jeremy Kaplan, Tony Hale and Brian Wilson tackle the subject while tracking Clark through the process in their upcoming documentary A Will for the Woods.

Green burials are an alternative to contemporary funeral practices that involves fewer resources, and a more natural disposal process. Bodies are laid to rest in the earth using only biodegradable material, often in woodlands or other natural settings, attempting to help restore those areas. After hearing about a North Carolinian man preparing to take part in this old tradition, the filmmakers began to document Clark Wang’s journey to inspire his community and get them to take part in his green burial.

From the director’s statement, “For all of us, one of the core motivations in making A Will for the Woods was to shed light on this profound environmental and social movement. At first, we were primarily fascinated with green burial as a strategy for land conservation and the reduction of environmental impacts, but… we saw what a powerful spiritual experience green burial can be.”

Check out the new poster and first trailer for Revenge of the Green Dragons, directed by Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs) and produced by Martin Scorsese.

Revenge of the Green Dragons plays like an Asian-American version of Mean Streets, chronicling a vibrant underground crime scene in New York’s Chinatown during the late 1980s. Based on Frederick Dannen’s popular New Yorker article, the film stars Justin Chon and Kevin Wu as gangster brothers who have to take on being immigrants in the American metropolis, in addition to cops and rival gangs. The film could be a potent mix of Hong Kong action and New York City crime epic, which could prove a pretty winning combo.

The film debuts at the Toronto Film Festival and will then be available to DirecTV customers on demand starting September 11 before it hits theaters in October.

Welcome to Secret Stash, our series of conversations with filmmakers, actors, and critics about their favorite films that didn’t get the recognition or find the audience they deserved because they were too weird, too hard to find, or (of course) too indie.

In this installment of Secret Stash, actor Michael D. Cohen shares with us some of his favorite films that didn’t get the recognition they deserved or, in some cases, simply got buried in time. Michael has made several TV show appearances, including The Mindy Project2 Broke GirlsModern Family, and Eagleheart, and he was nominated for a Gemini along with his cast-mates in the Canadian animated series Grossology. He’ll be sharing the big screen with Miles Teller and J.K. When the Batkid took to the streets of San Francisco on November 15th of last year, the world took noticed as photos and videos of his escapade quickly went viral. Thousands of news stations, a couple real Batmen, and even the President of the United States chimed in to cheer on the lil’ Caped Crusader. What was expected to be a Make-A-Wish event attended by a couple hundred well-wishers soon morphed into a nearly city-wide event that thousands of supportive voices showed for, in order to help make Miles Scott’s wish to become “a real Batman” come true.

Now halfway through its IndieGoGo campaign, the documentary Batkid Begins is also looking for support in order to tell Miles’ and Make-A-Wish’s incredible story. Sponsored by Moving Train, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to documentary films, Batkid Begins goes further into the story than the brief fluff pieces aired on most major networks, finding out more about Miles, his family, and the overwhelming support generated for his story. The film’s IndieGoGo reads, “did Miles need the world for inspiration? Or did the world need Miles?”

Get a glimpse inside the mind of a brilliant man, at the woman who loved him, and the body that let him down. Director James Marsh (Oscar-winner for the documentary Man on Wire) chronicles the fascinating life of theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking, bringing the story back to Hawking’s time as an able-bodied young student at the University of Cambridge. Despite being diagnosed with motor neurone disease at 21 years old and being given a life expectancy of 2 years from that point, Hawking to this day delivers out highly influential findings on matters of spacetime and black holes.

Starring as the famed scientist is Eddie Redmayne (My Week with Marilyn, Les Miserables), whose physical transformation looks remarkable from the trailer alone. He stars alongside Felicity Jones (Like Crazy, a potential upcoming Black Cat spinoff from The Amazing Spider-Man 2) who plays Hawking’s first wife Jane Wilde. In real life, the couple divorced in 1995 (Hawking re-married later that year only to get divorced once again in 2006) but it’s unclear if The Theory of Everything will dive that far into Hawking’s present. Both performers have been regarded as potential Oscar nominees for their roles in this film.

The Theory of Everything will also star Emily Watson, David Thewlis and Charlie Cox. Check out the new trailer, released just today, below:

Art and Craft may not sound compelling at first glance, a documentary about one registrar’s relentless pursuit of an art forger; however, in learning about Mark Landis, a diagnosed schizophrenic and one of the world’s most prolific art forgers, the story turns into a rabbit hole of twists and turns. Unlike regular forgers, Landis didn’t try to cash in on his knock-offs. He instead posted as a philanthropic donor, giving hundreds of paintings to museums, only for to be found out by registrar Matthew Leininger.

The documentary directed by Sam Cullman and Jennifer Grausman and co-directed by Mark Becker, Art and Craft premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival before bouncing up and down the Northeast from the Montclair Film Festival to the Nantucket Film Festival. Now with its new poster and trailer, Oscilloscope has set a September 19th release date for New York City before Art and Craft expands to other cities.

Check out the new trailer for the film Honeymoon, starring Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) and Luke Treadaway (Attack the Block) about a newly married couple looking to enjoy their retreat to an isolated cabin in the woods. Yeah, that’s not going to end up well…

Horror films set in a cabin in the woods have pretty well played out, but Honeymoon looks to work more with psychological dread than shock. After a mysterious incident, Paul begins to notice something wrong with his new bride. Though she seems fine on the surface, she is a little off. Is Paul going out of his mind or is there something sinister happening? The film is written and directed by first-timer Leigh Janiak. The horror genre has long been without much of a female voice behind the camera, so with a strong debut, Janiak will definitely be one to watch.

Honeymoon debuted earlier this year at the South by Southwest Film Festival to strong review and has since played at a number of horror and genre festivals. Honeymoon opens in theaters on September 12.

Check out the first trailer for Sundance hit Dear White People, written and directed by Justin Simien. The film stars Tyler James Williams and Tessa Thompson as black students at a primarily white Ivy League college during a time of racial discontent.

By the looks of the trailer, Dear White People seems to be a sharp comedy that actually tackles some difficult questions. It’s difficult for a film to take on the subject of race without feeling overly angry or completely washed-over, so the film may be a welcome attempt to seriously talk about race in the quote-unquote post-racial modern era. We had positive things to say about Dear White People at its LAFF premiere last month.

Dear White People opens in theaters on October 17.

Not content with merely being the singer/songwriter for a beloved band, Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch makes his feature film debut as a writer/director with God Help the Girl. Murdoch’s first film features stars Sucker Punch‘s Emily Browning as Eve, a girl in Glasgow who forms a pop group and spends her summer crafting songs alongside friends Cass (Hannah Murray) and James (Olly Alexander).

The new teaser, set to songs by Stuart Murdoch, gives the new movie a quirky look and feel. Almost as if the objective is a Wes Anderson-esque approach to the movie-musical. Many shots utilize parallel framing in the style that Anderson loves, and there are bright, contrasted colors in many scenes. The result seems like a charming take on coming-of-age, and many of the reviews out of Sundance (as well its other festival stops) corroborate that idea.

God Help The Girl will be released in New York City on September 5th, see the poster and watch the teaser trailer below:

Something’s strange at this seemingly idyllic retreat. The grounds are beautiful, the amenities look perfect, but there’s something very weird going on in the guest house. Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss play a married couple seeking to feel, “renewed,” as marriage counselor Ted Danson phrases it; however, upon arriving at their getaway, the couple can’t help but be drawn to the strangeness of the house in the backyard.

Produced by the Duplass Brothers as well as Mel Eslyn, The One I Love comes from director Charlie McDowell and writer Justin Lader, both making their feature film debut here. Despite the relative inexperience of the film’s creators, The One I Love (read a brief review) nimbly incorporates its extremely unique sci-fi twist into more familiar relationship-dramatic-comedy territory. The movie’s a compelling one that keeps finding inventive ways to utilize its novel premise, examining the tribulations of committed relationships.

After premiering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and bouncing around the festival circuit since then (including Tribeca where I interviewed McDowell), The One I Love comes out in limited release on August 15th. Check out the intriguing trailer to one of the coolest films so far this year below:

Freaked out by a sudden marriage proposal, Megan (Keira Knightley) takes a week to lay low at the house of a high schooler (Chloë Grace Moretz) that she’s only just met. Sometime after Megan’s bought her new teenage hangers on beers, made out with her young friend’s father, and tweaked the nipples of a Buddha statue, it becomes clear that Moretz isn’t playing the only adolescent in Laggies.

From Humpday and Touchy Feely director Lynn Shelton, her first feature based on a script she didn’t pen (that credit goes to first-time scribe Andrea Seigel), Laggies debuted at this year’s Sundance film festival to mostly positive reviews. Many noted that the Megan role is one of the best Knightley’s had in her career, and makes for great use of her abilities as an actress. Coming off of her starring role in Begin Again, Knightley’s established a side to her career that doesn’t need to involve the Pirates franchise or Jane Austen novels but instead sees her playing far more normal characters.

The film also stars Sam Rockwell. Which is good news, because he’s Sam Rockwell. Check out Keira Knightley, Chloë Grace Moretz and Sam Rockwell in the new trailer and teaser poster from director Lynn Shelton’s upcoming coming-of-age comedy Laggies — opening in select theaters October 24h!

Imagine waking up everyday with no new memories. Your mind a complete blank slate except for everything you knew up until a traumatic accident. Until one day, someone reveals a new truth to you that forces you to investigate everything you had thought to be reliable. No, don’t say Memento, this isn’t Memento (probably); it’s Before I Go To Sleep, the new film from the writer of 28 Weeks Later and The American, Rowan Jaffe.

The upcoming mystery/thriller Before I Go To Sleep stars Nicole Kidman as the amnesiatic woman, and Colin Firth and Mark Strong as the other points on a love triangle. Before I Go To Sleep seems to have implemented a video camera device for Nicole’s character to leave herself messages, and likely preventing Kidman from needing to ink several body tattoos as notes-to-self. The movie is based on the novel of the same name, the first published by English author S. J. Watson.

Before I Go to Sleep will be released in the UK on September 5th and the US on September 12th, check out the trailer below:

Amreeka tracked a Palestinian family immigrating to the United States; however, director Cherien Dabis‘ upcoming follow-up to her 2009 debut film, takes that central idea and practically reverses it. May in the Summer centers on May Brennan, a New Yorker & newly published author, returning home to her family in Jordan before a planned wedding to her fiance Ziad. But leaving New York isn’t made easy, as her born-again Christian mother sets on boycotting May’s wedding to a Muslim man, her younger sisters squabble like kids, and her estranged father attempts to reconnect with her.

Summer notably stars writer/director Cherien as May, in her film acting debut. The movie also stars Arrested Development-alum Alia Shawkat as one of the younger sisters, The Visitor standout Hiam Abbass, and President of the United States Bill Pullman. Already an opening night selection of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, May in the Summer went on to play in the BFI London Film Festival, Dubai International Film Festival and Venice International Film Festival.

Have we ever mentioned how much we love Alamo Drafthouse here at Way Too Indie? This small theater chain from Austin, TX constantly ranks as one of the best theaters in the world. And for good reason. The theater has fixes for all the things you hate about typical movie theatre experiences. In addition to it’s fantastic custom programming before each screening, up-scale food and drink options, and not allowing children in under the age of six, Alamo Drafthouse has a strict no talking/no texting policy. To help educate the audience members on its etiquette policy, Alamo Drafthouse plays hilarious PSA announcements before each film begins. In the past, guests in their videos have ranged from George Romero, Will Ferrell, Nicolas Winding Refn, Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, and Danny DeVito to name a few.

Now Richard Linklater has joined in on the fun as his anticipated film Boyhood hits its theatrical run. With Wilco’s “Hate it Here” song playing in the background, Linklater reveals before getting into his career as a filmmaker he used to be a “paid hitman”. He then demonstrates how to take care of a texter/talker with a straw. The video satirically states, “Please don’t talk or text or someone might stab a straw into your brain”. Watch the video below.

Mexican actor Mario Moreno was one of the pioneers of what’s considered the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, the South of the Border answer to Charlie Chaplin. Moreno, more commonly known as Cantinflas, spent half a century as an entertainer, moving from obscurity in the traveling circus of Mexico City to world-wide fame as the star of Around the World in Eighty Days. Now Cantinflas the actor is receiving the biopic treatment with Cantinflas, the upcoming film biopic from Mexican director Sebastian del Amo.

Always a master at handling ominous material, 20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for David Fincher’s Gone Girl.

The highly anticipated novel adaptation stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as Nick and Amy Dunne, a married couple whose personal life and history becomes public fodder when Amy goes missing the day of their wedding anniversary. As the primary suspect Nick is under extreme scrutiny from the press and the police investigating her disappearance. The trailer finally hints at what readers of the book know, much of the story is told through Amy’s journal entries and it appears that Fincher is using narration to move the mystery along.

Fincher is a proven expert when it comes to dubious characters (we’re looking at you Frank Underwood) and we can’t wait to see the film when it hits theaters on October 3rd.

SNL-alums Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader confront harsh realities in the upcoming release from Roadside Attractions The Skeleton Twins. Writer/director Craig Johnson (previously of True Adolescents) won the Walt Salt Screenwriting Award along with his co-writer Mark Heyman (Black Swan) at this year’s Sundance Film Festival for The Skeleton Twins, which received many positive notices including one here at Way Too Indie.

In this dramatic comedy, Hader and Wiig play siblings living with one another after failed suicide attempts. Wiig shows anxiety as the wife of Luke Wilson, who happily announces to her brother that, “We’re trying to get pregnant,” because ‘phrasing it with “we” makes it not sexist.’ Hader, an unsuccessful gay actor, struggles with living in a small town and lip-synchs with his sister to Starship’s “Nothing Going to Stop Us Now.”

Aaron’s remarkable work in the field of social justice inspired millions but simultaneously ruffled the feathers of high ranking government officials still rattled by the Wikileaks scandal and a “wild west” internet landscape they were desperately trying to control.

In Part 2 of our video interview with Knappenberger, we discuss how older government officials are out of touch with the internet, how government needs to adapt to the digital age, distributing the film in accordance with Aaron’s principles, the reaction of young people to the film, and more.
