Jean-Marc Vallée is pretty intent on making sure audiences get their yearly dose of heavy-duty emotion. After pulling our hearts out in Dallas Buyers Club and making our eyes red with last year’s Wild, it appears he’s back to beat on our empathetic heartstrings once again. And, this time, he’s getting literal.

In the new trailer for Demolition, which opened last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Davis Mitchell, who writes letters of complaint against a vending machine company for that too-often occurrence of a machine failing to deliver on its candy promise. An especially infuriating experience because his wife had died hours earlier in a car accident. When a customer service representative, Karen (Naomi Watts), calls back out of concern for Mr. Mitchell, the two form a wayward friendship which introduces Mitchell to Karen’s son Chris (Judah Lewis).

Davis struggles to truly mourn his wife’s loss and begins a literal deconstruction of his life, with the help of Chris. Chris Cooper plays his father-in-law trying to get him to move on. We imagine tissues will be a must for this one.

Demolition releases theatrically April 8th, 2016.

And it looks gorgeous. ]]>

With today’s announcement of the 2016 Independent Spirit Award nominations and now a new official trailer Terrence Malick‘s highly-anticipated Knight Of Cups, you’ll have plenty to talk about over Thanksgiving dinner with the family this year (wait, Malick isn’t a frequent topic around your table?). Our first glimpse of the film came in the form of a rather cryptic trailer ahead of its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. And surprise, this new trailer doesn’t offer a whole lot of new information (this is a Malick film after all). Though that doesn’t make us any less excited for the film, which features performances from Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Teresa Palmer, and Natalie Portman.

Knight of Cups opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.

Quentin Tarantino‘s really got his hands full, huh?

Following the director’s recent comments regarding police brutality—“I’m on the side of the murdered,” he said at a New York City rally on Oct. 24th—police unions across the country, including the Border Patrol and the Fraternal Order of Police, have called for a boycott of all Tarantino films, including his upcoming snowy western The Hateful Eight.

Tarantino’s been defending his stance on the issue, claiming he’s “not a cop hater.” The murder of a New York police officer, Randolph Holder, just a week before his appearance at the controversial protest, didn’t help quell the fiery national debate that quickly erupted around the director’s comments.

Fighting tooth and nail for his right to speak publicly against police brutality is surely the last thing the widely beloved director was planning to do in the final weeks leading up to his eighth feature film, but a shiny nugget of good news has arrived today in the form of a new, awesome trailer for The Hateful Eight.

The movie’s had a rough road—if you remember, it almost didn’t get made at all when the script was leaked to the public by one of star Bruce Dern‘s people (that bastard!). Tarantino scrapped the project in a fit of rage, but thankfully for us he changed his tune. Perhaps most members of law enforcement won’t be coming out to watch the film in “glorious 70mm” this Christmas like the rest of us, but maybe the latest trailer will compel some of them to show up in disguise.

The Hateful Eight stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Bruce Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demian Bichir, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen. Here’s the official synopsis:

Set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces: Bob (Demian Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

The Hateful Eight drops on Christmas Day, but only in the 70mm format. It releases wide on January 8th on all formats.

Facebook has become ubiquitous. An unavoidable entity of the modern era, it has reshaped how many people view the world, their friends, their social status, and themselves. The new film from Brant PinvidicWhy I’m Not On Facebook, aims to explore the social media giant that has a restrictive grip upon our lives, and figure out just exactly what Facebook is. And now Way Too Indie’s got an exclusive clip from the film where Pindivic and co. take a look at just how easy it is to manipulate your life on the Internet.

Why I’m Not On Facebook follows Pindivic (who has a wide range of TV producing credits) as he searches for answers after his son asks why he can’t create a profile of his own. Built from interviews, archival news footage, and Pindivic’s eccentric quest, the film explores what Facebook has done to our daily lives, and hints at some of the darker aspects that we might not be aware of.

Check out the exclusive clip and the first trailer below. And feel free to air any Facebook related grievances in the comments.

Why I’m Not On Facebook goes On Demand on November 3rd.

WATCH: New Trailer for ‘Love’ Asks What Your Ultimate Fantasy Is http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-love-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-love-trailer/#respond Wed, 30 Sep 2015 14:47:55 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=40764 Gaspar Noé's wild erotic sexapade drama gets a new SFW trailer.]]>

French filmmaker Gaspar Noé isn’t afraid to push boundaries. His previous films Irreversible and Enter the Void dared us to look away from difficult subject matter, while dazzling us with technical visuals and clever non-linear narratives. So when he premiered his latest film Love at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, audiences weren’t exactly surprised that the film is a provocative sexual melodrama shot in 3D. Especially given early marketing campaigns for the film included “NSFW” in bold letters everywhere and Noe confessing the film is meant to “give guys a hard-on and make girls cry.” But the critical reaction from Cannes suggested the film is a bit more gentle than you may expect—including our own review which stated, “It may be Noé’s tamest and most grounded film yet.”

This new trailer is safe for work, though it does walk a thin line. Love opens in 3D Theaters in New York on October 30th, 2015 and expands to more on November 6th. Below is a brief synopsis of the film:

Murphy is an American living in Paris who enters a highly sexually and emotionally charged relationship with the unstable Electra. Unaware of the seismic effect it will have on their relationship, they invite their pretty neighbor into their bed.

WATCH: Epic Battle Between Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy in New Trailer For ‘The Revenant’ http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-epic-battle-the-revenant-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-epic-battle-the-revenant-trailer/#respond Tue, 29 Sep 2015 15:42:15 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=40735 New trailer for Oscar contender 'The Revenant' features an epic battle between Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.]]>

A new trailer has surfaced for The Revenant, the highly-anticipated film from Alejandro G. Iñarritu (Birdman) which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domnhall Gleeson, and Will Poulter. We already got a glimpse of the beautiful cinematography from the masterful Emmanuel Lubezki in the first trailer, and there’s some gorgeous shots in this one too, but now we’re starting to see some of the actual plot.

The story is inspired by true events of one man’s grand adventure for survival, as legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is abandoned by his own crew after getting mauled by a bear. The Revenant showcases his survival of life-threatening injuries in harsh winter conditions as well as his pursuit for redemption.

The Revenant opens in limited theaters on December 25, 2015—just in time for Oscars contention—then goes wide on January 8, 2016.

Back in 1967 French filmmaker Francois Truffaut (The 400 Blows, Day For Night) sat down with legendary director Alfred Hitchcock to discuss his filmmaking style and career up to that point. This new documentary from Kent Jones acts like a companion piece to the book Truffaut wrote from his interview, which includes several audio recordings from the actual interview. He also calls in several prominent directors such as; Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, David Fincher, and others who offer insight on the master of suspense’s work.

Hitchcock/Truffaut premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and recently at Telluride and TIFF, and will open in New York on December 2nd. If you consider yourself a film buff, or simply curious to what made Hitchcock so special, be sure to check out the trailer for Hitchcock/Truffaut.

WATCH: Eddie Redmayne Goes For Back-to-Back Oscars in ‘The Danish Girl’ http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-eddie-redmayne-goes-for-back-to-back-oscars-in-the-danish-girl/ http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-eddie-redmayne-goes-for-back-to-back-oscars-in-the-danish-girl/#respond Tue, 01 Sep 2015 16:51:37 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=39930 Can Eddie Redmayne become the first actor since Tom Hanks to win back-to-back Best Actor Oscars?]]>

At this time last year, The Theory of Everything was a week away from its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, and its star, Eddie Redmayne, was just a 32-year-old British scamp ready to shock the world with his performance as Stephen Hawking. A year later, Redmayne has positioned himself to become the first actor since Tom Hanks in ’94/’95 to win back-to-back golden statues. The Danish Girl reunites Redmayne with Les Miserables director Tom Hooper for an unexpectedly topical biopic co-starring Alicia Vikander, Amber Heard, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Ben Whishaw.

Telling the story of transgender woman Lili Elbe, one of the first identifiable recipients of sexual reassignment surgery. Born in 1880s Denmark as Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener, Lili became an artist and married her wife Gerda Gottlieb before discovering she came to her gender identity realization. The soft lighting, period setting, and expositional dialog all seem reminiscent of director Hooper’s last sweeping Oscars success, The King’s Speech; however, the depiction of Lili’s transition from a man to a woman is bound to become a discussion point as The Danish Girl aims to be part of awards conversations.

The Danish Girl premieres September 5th as part of the Venice Film Festival and will be released Stateside on November 27th.

Slasher Film Tropes Make For Hilarious ‘The Final Girls’ Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/slasher-film-tropes-make-for-hilarious-the-final-girls-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/slasher-film-tropes-make-for-hilarious-the-final-girls-trailer/#respond Tue, 25 Aug 2015 18:09:16 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=39745 Flashbacks, slow motion, and virginal heroes. No '80s slasher trope is safe from poking fun.]]>

Not everyone holds the campy horror art form of ’80s slasher films in as high esteem as a few of us over here at Way Too Indie. But if you know anything about this pivotal direction in the history of horror, you may recall it was the first to introduce the concept of The Final Girl, referring to the female protagonist who takes a stand and defeats the (often masked) threat plaguing her and her friends/family/campers. It was a bit of a leap as far as feminism in horror films go, even if said characters had to abide by certain rules, such as remaining virginal to the end and thus deserving of victory. Baby steps, right?

Writers M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller have found the inherent hilarity present in almost every slasher film and written a sort of meta spoof capitalizing on this unique genre. In this first trailer for The Final Girls from director Todd Strauss-Schulson, four friends at a movie marathon of a popular ’80s slasher franchise—starring the lead character’s (Taissa Farmiga) recently deceased scream-queen mother (Malin Akerman)—find themselves pushed into the film and forced to live out its plot to find their way out. Doing their best to keep everyone alive along the way while pursued by Billy the masked bad guy.

Due in theaters October 9, The Final Girls looks to be a refreshing addition to the slew of horror films pushed on us that time of year. Finally, a horror film you’re supposed to laugh at.

WATCH: ‘The Witch’ Will Scare The Crap Out Of You http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-the-witch-will-scare-the-crap-out-of-you/ http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-the-witch-will-scare-the-crap-out-of-you/#comments Wed, 19 Aug 2015 18:32:00 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=39621 We couldn't resist watching the trailer for the indie horror film from Sundance, The Witch.]]>

It feels like 2014 all over again. Last year, audiences at Sundance could not stop raving about Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook, a horror film that apparently scared the crap out of anyone who saw it. This year, it happened again: Dave Eggers’ directorial debut The Witch screened to raves from terrified critics at Sundance, and quickly turned into one of the most buzzed about films at the festival. A24 quickly snatched up distribution rights, and now after months of waiting, a very unsettling trailer has arrived. Here’s a rundown of the plot if you don’t know:

Set in New England circa 1630, The Witch follows a farmer who get cast out of his colonial plantation and is forced to move his family to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest rumored to be controlled by witches. Almost immediately, strange and unsettling things begin to happen-the animals turn violent, the crops fail, and one of the children disappears, only to return seemingly possessed by an evil spirit. As suspicion and paranoia mount, everyone begins to point the finger at teenage daughter Thomasin. They accuse her of witchcraft, which she adamantly denies…but as circumstances become more and more treacherous, each family member’s faith, loyalty, and love will be tested in shocking and unforgettable ways.

And despite our best efforts to go into this one blind, we couldn’t resist getting a peek at the film, and this one looks like it’s going to be quite a trip. Unfortunately, A24 has only given us a tentative release date of “2016” for The Witch, meaning we’ll have to wait a bit longer to watch all the madness unfold. But if you’re lucky enough to attend this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, The Witch will have its Canadian premiere there. We’re hoping we’ll catch a glimpse soon, because after watching this trailer, 2016 feels very far away.

Check out the new teaser trailer.]]>

Quentin Tarantino‘s long-awaited 8th film The Hateful Eight is set for release this Christmas, but the first real glimpse at footage has just arrived in the form its new trailer. The Hateful Eight collects an impressive ensemble of actors including Taratino’s returning favorites (Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern) along with a couple of new faces (Jennifer Jason Leigh, Demian Bichir, a perhaps-under-wraps cameo from a Foxcatcher star) for this tale of betrayal “six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War.” Filmed in gorgeous 70mm against the snowy mountainscapes of Colorado (in place of Wyoming, where the story is set), this trailer reveals the central cast of characters in all their fur coat, brimmed hat, twanged accent glory.

The Hateful Eight centers on a stagecoach lead by bounty hunter John “The Hangman” Ruth (Russell) as he drives toward the town of Red Rock, where his passenger Daisy Domergue (Leigh) is set to hang. On the road, the two come across Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a former union soldier who has taken up bounty hunting himself, as well as Chris Mannix (Goggins), a Southern renegade that claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Attempting to escape an intensifying blizzard, the four duck into Minnie’s Haberdashery to discover four unfamiliar faces in Bob (Bichir), Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). The travelers attempt to outlast the storm as well as each other, and make it to Red Rock alive.

It’s been three and a half weeks since 20th Century Fox revealed the Deadpool trailer at their panel at Comic-Con to roaring applause and tangible excitement. Three weeks since a puny little phone camera version was leaked on the Internet and the viral response to it showed just how much audiences have been waiting for this. First revealed in The New Mutants #98 in 1991, and first played by Ryan Reynolds in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, this wise cracking anti-hero has been aching to make it to the big screen and it’s finally here. In a world where superheroes eat daisies for breakfast and poop rainbows and polish their halos every night before bed, Deadpool promises the first of a new kind of hero. As he so aptly says in the trailer, “Daddy needs to express some rage.”

So without further ado, you’ve waited long enough. Coming out on February 12, 2016, be sure to watch the newly released trailer for Deadpool.

WATCH: ‘Stonewall’, The Single Most Important Event in the LGBT Rights Movement Gets a Movie http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-stonewall-the-single-most-important-event-in-the-lgbt-rights-movement-gets-a-movie/ http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-stonewall-the-single-most-important-event-in-the-lgbt-rights-movement-gets-a-movie/#respond Tue, 04 Aug 2015 21:20:09 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=39139 The ignition moment of the modern LGBT movement is showcased in rousing first trailer for 'Stonewall'. ]]>

As the LGBT rights movement continues to make huge strides in America, it feels like a fitting time to start to look back at the many battles fought by this ostracized and abused group of people. One such historical turning point is the Stonewall riots of 1969 in New York City, the violence and passion of which inspired the greater LGBT community to rally and get organized in their efforts for equality and safety.

Now we have a stirring first trailer for Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall, a film following a fictional young gay man, played by Jeremy Irvine, forced to flee his home when his sexual orientation proves too much for his friends and family, who ends up on the streets of Greenwich Village, NYC. He befriends a group of people made up of young gays, lesbians, and drag queens who introduce him to the Stonewall Inn, a gay-friendly mafia-run club and safe-haven. But eventually even their safe space starts to be regularly raided by the NYPD, who harass the people there. The historical consequence to this constant persecution was an eruption of rage in the form of two days of riots and a kick-off of the modern LGBT movement.

Though not the first film version of this important historical event, it certainly feels like the man who gave us Independence Day, Stargate, and The Patriot is a seasoned pro at igniting pride, and this two-minute trailer is plenty inspiring. The film also stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Joey King, and Ron Perlman and will be released in theaters September 25.

A vastly opposing turn from last year’s mostly light and decidedly oddball Frank, Lenny Abrahamson’s next film—which will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival as a Special Program—looks to be a heartstring tightener. Room stars Brie Larson and newcomer Jacob Tremblay as a mother and son trapped within the confines of a 10ft x 10 ft one-room shed. Based on the book by Emma Donoghue, Larson plays Ma, a young woman determined not to let the smallness of the universe she and her son Jack (Tremblay) occupy limit his growth and world experience.

As evidenced by the teaser, Ma and Jack make a daring escape and young Jack faces the shocking reality that there is a world beyond the four walls he’s only ever known. Also starring William H. Macy and Joan Allen the film looks like it should elicit some serious emotion.

The film releases limitedly on October 16th and nationwide November 6th.

After an impressive first season, that not only drew from its 1996 film origin but added elaborate depth and sustained an intriguing and comedic noir, FX’s Fargo is finally giving us an in-depth glimpse at season two.

A few things we already knew: Season two is set in 1979 in Luverne, MN and Sioux Falls, SD (a town near and dear to this website) and revolves around a case mentioned a few times in the first season. Following their established knack for an elaborate and well-rounded ensemble, the faces featured in season two’s trailer show just what a punch this next season is likely to pack. Patrick Wilson and Ted Danson are the lead law enforcement characters, trying to solve a murder that appears to include connections with what amounts to the perfect Hollywood Midwestern barbeque guest list: Jean Smart, Kieran CulkinNick OffermanJesse Plemons, Kirsten DunstBokeem Woodbine, Jeffrey Donovan, Cristin Milioti and we didn’t even get a glimpse of Bruce Campbell yet!

The ’70s references are abundant, starting off with a Watergate joke and tying in with Dunst’s character showing an interest in ’70s cult-like New Age training program, Lifespring. Dunst always did look pretty great with feathered hair.

The trailer is plenty promising with what looks like all the same dark humor and as much if not more of the twisty murder mystery we came to crave from season one. The only downside? Because FX took their time renewing the show after season one, we have to wait until October before we get to watch. But with all that snow, it might just make for a more fitting viewing experience.

After the massive success of Skyfall–the biggest James Bond film ever—it was rather surprising to see all the trouble it took to get Spectre off the ground—especially in today’s sequel driven culture. Originally, Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes said he felt “physically ill” at the prospect of returning to the spy series—even after smashing box office records and racking up awards nods. Rumors swirled around the developing picture for months before it was finally confirmed that Mendes would direct. Now, with a new trailer arriving today, we can all be thankful that he did.

While most of the plot has been kept tightly under wraps, what we do know is, Spectre finds Bond (the only-getting-handsomer Daniel Craig) confronted with a cryptic message from his long-hidden past that leads to an encounter with the mysterious organization Spectre. All the while the new M (Ralph Fiennes) takes on political adversaries to keep the British secret service alive.

Written by the same team behind Skyfall (John Logan, Neal Purvis, and Robert Wade) Spectre hopes to capitalize on the reinvigorated tone of the franchise and make another cool billion. To boot, the support here is deep, rounded out by Lea SeydouxChristoph Waltz, Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Monica Bellucci.

Spectre arrives November 6th.

Iñarritu’s ‘The Revenant’ Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/leonardo-dicaprio-hunts-down-tom-hardy-in-alejandro-g-inarritus-the-revenant-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/leonardo-dicaprio-hunts-down-tom-hardy-in-alejandro-g-inarritus-the-revenant-trailer/#comments Fri, 17 Jul 2015 14:57:21 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=38569 Stunning preview for Alejandro G. Iñarritu's latest film 'The Revenant' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.]]>

Less than a year removed from his Best Director and Best Picture Academy Award wins for Birdman, director Alejandro G. Iñarritu has refueled his addicition to risky filmmaking through another ambitious collaboration with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. The Revenant, shot over the course of a few months in the largely untouched wilderness surrounding Calgary, was filmed entirely using natural lighting at the expense of the production’s flexibility. This expectedly facilitates some stunning long take camerawork from Lubezki, though much of the trailer more closely resembled the cinematographer’s chaotic work on Children of Men and not his more recent contributions to Birdman.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a trapper in the 1820s who is mauled by a bear, DiCaprio’s Hugh Glass survives his injuries, the harsh winter, and a hostile environment in order to take revenge against his traitorous partner (Tom Hardy). Domnhall Gleeson and Will Poulter star as well. The Revenant is not expected to début until December 25th (in limited release), so you will have to wait nearly half a year for the context of this exhiliarting and epic footage.

WATCH: Slack Off With Jason Schwartzman in Trailer for ‘7 Chinese Brothers’ http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-slack-off-with-jason-schwartzman-in-trailer-for-7-chinese-brothers/ http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-slack-off-with-jason-schwartzman-in-trailer-for-7-chinese-brothers/#respond Fri, 17 Jul 2015 03:24:15 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=38513 Jason Schwartzman is back to the role he does best, "flawed but likeable."]]>

Jason Schwartzman has always been a bit manic onscreen, his characters often charmingly smarmy. He’s quite possibly the perfect example of “flawed but likable”—which, by the way, is a deep compliment. So, while last year’s Listen Up Philip mixed up the formula a bit, Schwartzman seems to be back in his comfort zone with the first trailer for 7 Chinese Brothers.

The flick follows Larry (Schwartzman) as he’s booted from one job and forced to hunt down another—a large feat for the oft-inebriated slacker. Soon, though, Larry gets a bite at a tire and lube shop and meets Lupe, who just might help him get his life in order.

Written and directed by Bob Byington (Somebody Up There Likes Me), the cast is rounded out by Stephen Root, Olympia Dukakis, and TV on the Radio frontman Tunde Adebimpe. The film premiered at SXSW earlier this year to some positive nods, and the trailer promises laughs. But honestly, we’d line up for Schwartzman alone.

7 Chinese Brothers opens August 28th. Check out the first trailer below.

WATCH: Finally, a ‘Suicide Squad’ Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-finally-a-suicide-squad-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/watch-finally-a-suicide-squad-trailer/#respond Mon, 13 Jul 2015 20:31:06 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=38372 And Jared Leto's Joker is creepier than we could have imagined.]]>

Now those who couldn’t be at Comic-Con this past weekend get a taste of what Hall H-ers have already seen, a first look at the hotly anticipated Suicide Squad. The trailer was part of the explosive Warner Brothers panel this past weekend where almost the entire cast was brought out on stage including Will Smith and Margot Robbie as well as the film’s director David Ayer.

The trailer definitely gives us a sense of the Suicide Squad’s darker anti-heroics, finishing with a goosebump-inducing look at Jared Leto’s Joker. Along with the foul-mouthed Deadpool being a huge draw this past weekend at Comic-Con, it seems like the masses are getting a little bored with the straight-laced do-gooding superheroes that have saturated the movies so far. Time for a new form of justice.

Let us know what you think of the trailer in the comments and if you think the Suicide Squad casting is everything we hoped.

Michael Fassbender Rages in Tense, Operatic ‘Steve Jobs’ Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/michael-fassbender-rages-in-tense-operatic-steve-jobs-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/michael-fassbender-rages-in-tense-operatic-steve-jobs-trailer/#respond Thu, 02 Jul 2015 13:34:23 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=37952 The new 'Steve Jobs' trailer is here, and it's intense.]]>

It’s incomparable, in the modern age, the impact Steve Jobs had on the world. Tremors of his influence will permeate technology and culture years after his death, and the movie industry is no exception. Aside from the movies Pixar continues to churn out (Jobs was the studio’s majority shareholder since 1986), Jobs’ presence was more literally felt in Joshua Michael Stern’s 2013 pile of rubbish, Jobs, a pale, trashy representation of one of the most colorful lives ever lived in the public eye. That movie marked the false start to a line of Jobs biopics and documentaries (Alex Gibney‘s Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine is out this fall) that’ll stretch on into the foreseeable future.

Next in line to interpret Jobs’ story are two of our best: Danny Boyle and Aaron Sorkin. The director/writer dream team’s Steve Jobs has got a new trailer showing off Boyle and DP Alwin H. Küchler’s rich imagery and Sorkin’s nimble banter. We also get a good look at the cast, which includes Michael Fassbender as the man himself, Seth Rogen as burned right-hand-man Steve Wozniak, Kate Winslet as Macintosh marketing chief Joanna Hoffman and Jeff Daniels as Apple CEO John Sculley.

Aside from the fact that Fassbender looks and sounds much less like Jobs than Ashton Kutcher did, Boyle’s take on the modern American myth looks to be a better film than Jobs all around, with a more frenetic, focused approach to the story. It’s set backstage at three pivotal Apple product launches which, if you think about it, should be the perfect playing field for Sorkin to dole out his acrobatic verbiage. Boyle’s one of the most reliable filmmakers of our generation, and the film’s new trailer seems to indicate he won’t start failing us now.

Steve Jobs arrives on October 9th.

Released in Los Angeles on June 19th and being released in theaters on July 3rd in San Francisco, I Believe in Unicorns follows the drastic highs and lows of a dangerous young love. Award winning student director Leah Meyerhoff uses magical realism to weave the tale through teenage angst in a love gone bad.

Told from the fantastical and imaginative perspective of 16-year-old Davina (Natalia Dyer), who longs to escape from her role as sole caretaker of her disabled mother when she falls in love with an older boy named Sterling (Peter Vack). I Believe in Unicorns offers a complex look into troubled young love.

Making the official selection for the 2014 SXSW and Edinburgh Film Festivals, the film was also the Grand Jury Prize Winner at the 2014 Atlanta Film Festival and won for Best Original Song at the 2014 Nashville Film Festival. Lily Tomlin Gets a Tattoo and Scores Cash in ‘Grandma’ Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/lily-tomlin-gets-a-tattoo-and-scores-cash-in-grandma-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/lily-tomlin-gets-a-tattoo-and-scores-cash-in-grandma-trailer/#respond Mon, 22 Jun 2015 15:22:35 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=37563 Fresh trailer for the Sundance standout 'Grandma', starring the truly amazing Lily Tomlin. ]]>

Is it really possible that Lily Tomlin has gone this long without a starring vehicle of her own? The iconic actress has decades of perfectly timed, naturalistic punchlines under her belt, yet for years her parts have been largely reduced to limited arcs on TV shows or small, supporting roles in middling movies. Writer/Director Paul Weitz clearly saw the enormous potential in this market gap. Following his 2013 Tina Fey comedy Admission, in which Lily Tomlin played Fey’s mother, Weitz wrote an entire movie with Tomlin in mind.

Grandma premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to slew of praise for Tomlin (Way Too Indie caught up with it at Tribeca and had glowing things to say, too). Despite its title, Tomlin’s character is far form a withered, weakened old lady. In Grandma, Tomlin plays Elle Reid, a misanthropic lesbian poet, whose granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner) shows up broke and in need of an abortion. Together, the two journey to collect cash, confront their pasts, and hit Nat Wolff in the balls with a hockey stick.

Protect Yaself

Grandma also stars a collection of familiar faces, many of them in the trailer, including Sam Elliott, John Cho, Marcia Gay Harden, Judy Greer and Laverne Cox. While New Zealanders will get a early chance to see Grandma at the New Zealand International Film Festival in July, Americans everywhere will have to cope with Granmda‘s August 21st release date by watching and re-watching the pleasant new trailer below:

Teaser Trailer for AMC’s Newest Spinoff, ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ http://waytooindie.com/news/teaser-trailer-for-amc-spinoff-fear-the-walking-dead/ http://waytooindie.com/news/teaser-trailer-for-amc-spinoff-fear-the-walking-dead/#respond Fri, 19 Jun 2015 16:00:29 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=37500 Watch the zombie-free teaser clip for AMC's newest spinoff series, 'Fear the Walking Dead'.]]>

We’re shaking with excitement. For those, like us, who can’t get enough of any type of Walking Dead, Feared or otherwise, any morsel of what’s in store for us in the future gets us all geared up and ready to take on the apocalyptic world. So we’re sharing it with you.

The Fear the Walking Dead clip posted by Variety just this morning really puts the “tease” in teaser. It doesn’t give away much. Except that there will be a lot of…fear. No smidgen of a zombie is seen, but rumor has it they will have quite a different look from the current zombie type in Walking Dead as they will be a bit, well, more fresh. The trailer is titled “Nick’s Escape” so we’re guessing this is a character who might get more than a quick grisly death. IMDB credits a “Nick,” played by Frank Dillane, with six episodes in the series so we’ll see.

Also starring Ruben Blades, Mercedes Mason, Cliff Curtis, and Kim Dickens, to name a few, Fear the Walking Dead is set in Los Angeles at the very start of the walker outbreak. Or whatever we’re now calling it. Walking Dead fans may get a little bit more information on all that led up to where they started out back in 2010, but no one’s promising anything.

Check back with us in July when we cover the San Diego Comic-Con as both shows will be there along with Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick.

Fear the Walking Dead is set to premiere in August on AMC in what is as yet a two-season commitment.

Jemaine Clement Starts Over In ‘People, Places, Things’ Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/jemaine-clement-starts-over-in-people-places-things-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/jemaine-clement-starts-over-in-people-places-things-trailer/#respond Wed, 17 Jun 2015 20:18:36 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=37396 After his hilarious turn in 'What We Do In The Shadows' earlier this year, Jemaine Clement looks promising in a new dramedy. ]]>

We’re six years on from Flight Of The Concords, and while many still associate Jemaine Clement with the quintessential show, the Kiwi actor is slowly building a post-show name for himself. After a spat of vocal work and supporting roles, Clement has taken the lead in several winning indies. Earlier this year he starred in the hilarious mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows and now the first trailer has arrived for the forthcoming People, Places, Things.

Clement plays Will Henry, a floundering graphic novelist and professor in New York who is struggling to put his life back together, raise his twin daughters, and get back into the dating world after catching his long-time partner cheating on him with an old friend.

The formula for the film follows some familiar twists and turns, but with Clement up front, the proceedings look to have lots of potential. Written and directed by James C. Strouse (Grace Is Gone, The Winning Season), the support in this one is pretty stacked with Regina Hall, Jessica Williams, Stephanie Allynne, and Michael Chernus.

People, Places, Things won some winning reviews out of Sundance earlier this year, and we just caught it at the LA Film Festival this past weekend. The first trailer certainly has charm, so it’s safe to say we’ll be queueing up for this one on August 14th. Check out the trailer below.

The Game is Almost Over, New ‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2’ Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/new-hunger-games-mockingjay-part-2-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/new-hunger-games-mockingjay-part-2-trailer/#respond Tue, 09 Jun 2015 18:44:19 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=37051 The final chapter of the Hunger Games comes to an end in the newly released trailer with Jennifer Lawrence, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Jena Malone.]]>

It’s here. In anticipation for the culmination of the Hunger Games franchise, Katniss and Krew are taking on the Capital in full force. Peeta seems like he’s mentally back…fortunately for the sanity of us all; that might have been the pinnacle of tension to see him flip out on Katniss in the movie prior.

Getting a glimpse of some of his final cinematic scenes, seeing Philip Seymour Hoffman won’t be easy for anyone and will add what can only be a sense of very real tragedy to what looks to be an already tragic final episode. For those that have read the books (we highly suggest you do) we know that there is going to be an overflow of impending bloodshed in store for many a beloved character.

With filming of the battle scenes in France and the Capitol in Berlin, Germany, we’re looking forward to more Natalie Dormer who, according to IMDB, has top billing in this film. However, it looks like Johanna Mason, played by Jena Malone, will officially have the most screen time with Jennifer Lawrence. And we are actually going to be introduced to some new characters in this final call including another familiar face from Game of Thrones, Gwendoline Christie, as Commander Lyme.

Look for the 2D and 3D versions (this is a first for the series) both set for November 19th.

Everyone Has on Their Serious Faces in Two New ‘True Detective’ Trailers http://waytooindie.com/news/everyone-has-on-their-serious-faces-in-two-new-true-detective-trailers/ http://waytooindie.com/news/everyone-has-on-their-serious-faces-in-two-new-true-detective-trailers/#respond Mon, 08 Jun 2015 17:38:53 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=36973 The HBO gods give two new 'True Detective' trailers without revealing too much. ]]>

Last night in media you were either jazz-handing your way through the Tony Awards, screaming at LeBron on your television screen, or getting rather depressed at the unfolding events in Westeros. Which means you probably missed that HBO gave us TWO new True Detective Season 2 trailers.

The show, which returns with an all new cast and plot June 21 at 9pm on HBO, has thus far only hinted at plot and characters and now it, well, it hints a little bit more? The first trailer is another non-verbal mood-focused trailer letting us know that, similar to the first season, we should probably prepare for some Debbie Downer characters in the midst of some truly dark cases. Well at least we know they’re keeping the theme of cops-who-need-antidepressants alive.

The second trailer gives us our first taste of dialogue. Colin Farrell’s Ray Velcoro asks immediately if he’s supposed to solve this thing. We’re hoping this means he’s moody AND cocky. Love a cop who knows what he’s good at a la Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle. Vince Vaughn’s Frank Semyon claims to be “no good on the sidelines,” so we can only hope for some rogue bad-boy action on his part. And Rachel McAdams’ Ani Bezzerides generally looks tired, wary, and needing of a stiff drink. Given the twisted mystery of the first season, it makes sense that neither of these trailers would give us a whole lot more to go on, plot-wise, but our appetites are still most certainly whet.

Watch below and let us know if you’re as excited as we are:

Carey Mulligan-lead ‘Suffragette’ Has 2 New Trailers, Opening BFI London Film Fest http://waytooindie.com/news/carey-mulligan-lead-suffragette-trailers/ http://waytooindie.com/news/carey-mulligan-lead-suffragette-trailers/#respond Wed, 03 Jun 2015 15:33:57 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=36779 One of the early Oscar buzzed films of 2015, Suffragette, now has two trailers for viewing pleasure.]]>

Following The Imitation Game last year and Captain Phillips in 2013, Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette has set its European premiere date for opening night of the 59th BFI London Film Festival. A story of women fighting for women’s rights at the end of the 19th century, the feminist drama will debut on Wednesday, October 7th at the Odeon Leicester Square with simultaneous screenings taking place throughout the UK. With Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter as well as Meryl Streep in main roles, Suffragette is among the most highly anticipated films slated to come out in 2015.

Along with the news of its BFI London Film Fest premiere date, Suffragette has revealed two new look slightly different looks into surprisingly explosive upcoming film. Mulligan plays Maud, a working wife and mother who gets swept up by the foot soldiers of a growing feminist movement. Bonham Carter and Streep play fellow members of the movement, while villainous authority figure Brendan Gleeson seeks to dismantle their organization. Fancy period costumes are abound. The two newly released trailers have overlap, though the UK trailer is less ham-fisted in its unveiling of information.

Suffragette is scheduled to be released in New York and Los Angeles on October 23rd, expanding to more cities in the following weeks. While its BFI London Film Fest premiere is scheduled for October 7th, it’s worth noting that the gala has been advertised as Suffragette‘s “European Premiere,” leaving the door open for an appearance at a North American-set fall film festival.

Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg Are All Talk for ‘The End of the Tour’ Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/jason-segel-jesse-eisenberg-the-end-of-the-tour-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/jason-segel-jesse-eisenberg-the-end-of-the-tour-trailer/#respond Wed, 27 May 2015 14:58:53 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=36549 Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg chat it up in new trailer for Sundance standout The End of the Tour.]]>

The predominant theme emerging from Sundance Film Festival coverage of The End of the Tour was the revelatory performance from Jason Segel as David Foster Wallace. Starring alongside Jesse Eisneberg, Segel navigates the complexities of the late author’s troubled mind through the dialog-heavy exchanges about life, identity and anxiety. While Eisenberg has frequently demonstrated his ability to handle dramatic comedy tones, Segel has previously only shown glimpses of nuance through his Freaks & Geeks or Forgetting Sarah Marshall roles. Under the guidance of director James Ponsoldt (Smashed, The Spectacular Now), Jason Segel is said to have given his strongest performance to date, and may even be in store for an Oscar campaign later in 2015 according to some early prognosticators.

The End of the Tour is based on Rolling Stone contributor David Lipsky‘s book Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself, which chronicled the time Lipsky spent shadowing David Foster Wallace during his book tour for Infinite Jest. In the newly released first trailer, Eisenberg and Segel discuss the root of sadness flanked by the Mall of America’s indoor roller coaster, and debate whether or not they’d like to live as the other person. The contemplative, slightly melancholic first look at The End of the Tour provides a good glimpse for the mood audiences are likely to get from Ponsoldt’s new film, set to be released on July 31st.

‘Point Break’ is Back in First Trailer for Remake http://waytooindie.com/news/point-break-is-back-in-first-trailer-for-remake/ http://waytooindie.com/news/point-break-is-back-in-first-trailer-for-remake/#respond Wed, 27 May 2015 12:55:24 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=36536 No longer just bank robbers, Johnny Utah and friends are back in the new remake of Point Break.]]>

It was 24 years ago that Kathryn Bigelow‘s Point Break helped cement the rise of the future Oscar-winning director (for The Hurt Locker). The film starred a young Keanu Reeves playing it straight and tough after hamming it up for a few years as the time traveling goof Ted Logan and a long-haired Patrick Swayze as the surfer he was born to inhabit. All in all it’s a good crime flick—though today certain things ring a bit ridiculously: Reeves’ character being named Johnny Utah, the whole “we steal so we can surf” motivation–but it wasn’t ever a mega hit. Of course, to Warner Bros. none of that seems to matter. What matters is name recognition. So, later this year the world will get a glossy and very expensive new Point Break.

The remake has at least been updated a bit—hopefully enough to justify the remake. Point Break 2015 finds Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) infiltrating a team of extreme sports athletes who he suspects of being behind a string of fancy corporate heists (the big changes here being the international setting and that they are no longer just bank robbers).

The film is directed by Ericson Core (Invincible), who also acts as his own cinematographer. Bracey—a mostly untested newcomer, his biggest credit so far being G.I. Joe: Retaliation—is joined by Edgar Ramirez (The Counselor, Deliver Us From Evil) as Bodhi the baddie. Support is given by Teresa Palmer, Ray Winstone, Delroy Lindo.

The big question here is whether anyone cares. It’s been a while since anyone has taken Point Break seriously, and this one looks to be pretty self-serious and unaware. Either way, we’ll try to stay optimistic—it’s always nice to be surprised. Point Break surfs into theaters Christmas day. Check out the first trailer below.

Amy Winehouse Breaks Our Hearts All Over Again in First Trailer for ‘Amy’ http://waytooindie.com/news/amy-winehouse-breaks-our-hearts-all-over-again-in-first-trailer-for-amy/ http://waytooindie.com/news/amy-winehouse-breaks-our-hearts-all-over-again-in-first-trailer-for-amy/#respond Thu, 21 May 2015 01:52:22 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=36387 Amy Winehouse's career rise and untimely death are given intimate and heartbreaking inspection in the trailer for the highly lauded documentary 'Amy'. ]]>

When she passed away in 2011 at the mystically unlucky and considerably-too-young age of 27, musical artist Amy Winehouse left behind a huge following of admirers and fans. Her death was the sort that was all the more bitter in its feeling of inevitability. The singer/songwriter had struggled with alcoholism for many years, her visits to rehab made public by their obvious connection to her music and lyrics. But no matter how doomed she may have seemed, no one can deny the deep loss of a sincere and unique talent in the music world.

Now the acclaimed director of Senna and The Warrior, Asif Kapadia, has sliced together bits and pieces of footage of this deeply interesting women’s life into another of his deeply personal documentaries. Amy premiered at Cannes last week and has quickly become one of the most buzzed about films in competition this year. Already from the snippets put together in this first trailer the profound sadness of Amy Winehouse is deeply felt. Her rise to fame appears to be portrayed as something of a surprise occurrence to this highly artistic woman who only wanted to create the music she loved and got caught up (like so many have before her) in celebrity and expectation.

We know viewing this one will be a wrench in the heart, but Amy understood better than all of us what it means to go “back to black.”

When the film held its North American debut at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Manglehorn was one of two movies touted for featuring “the best Al Pacino performance in [x] years.” The other, The Humbling, came into theaters and onto VOD January 23rd without much fanfare. Five months later, Manglehorn is set for its own simultaneous theatrical and on-demand release with a new poster and brand-new trailer.

The latest from prolific director David Gordon Green (George Washington, Pineapple Express), Manglehorn is a dream-like look into the life of key maker A.J. Manglehorn (Pacino). Still heartbroken over a woman whose love he lost years ago, Manglehorn pens lovesick letters while serendipitously solving problems for the various people he meets around town. Co-starring Holly Hunter, Chris Messina and Harmony Korine in a scene-stealing role as a degenerate former Little League player that Manglehorn once coached, Green’s film is full of evocative visuals and a trippy sound mix that blends several scenes together. Manglehorn will get a limited release the same day it appears on VOD, June 19th.

Director Jeremy Saulnier‘s second feature Blue Ruin, a stripped down revenge thriller, took the indie world by storm last year on its way to a nomination for the John Cassavetes Award at the 2015 Indie Spirit Awards. Wasting little time in assembling a follow-up, Saulnier is now in Cannes to debut his next color-related movie Green Room. Featuring a larger and more well-known cast than his previous film, including Patrick Stewart, Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots, Green Room held its Cannes Film Festival premiere over the weekend to a largely positive reception.

Green Room follows a group of punk rockers called The Ain’t Rights, who take an ill-advised gig in the backwoods of Oregon, only to stumble onto violent crime and in the middle of a confrontation with the local, violent, white-supremacist gang. Patrick Stewart plays the leader of the gang. Green Room also stars Alia Shawkat, Joe Cole, Callum Turner, Mark Webber, as well as Blue Ruin star Macon Blair.

Oh, poor Dylan O’Brien. Just when you thought you were out they pull you right back in, huh? When last seen as Thomas, O’Brien was darting between walls as they closed in on him to make it through The Maze Runner‘s titular obstacle. This time, he’s out of the maze but stuck in a whole new type of labyrinth. “They could be the key to everything,” Patricia Clarkson says about our very special cast of characters near the top of the trailer before adding, “It’s time to begin phase 2” (in case you forgot this installment was a sequel).

The Scorch Trials is the continued adaptation of James Dashner’s YA dystopian novel series, a series whose success was by no means shaped by The Hunger Games series. Several returning actors from the first chapter are joined by Aidan Gillen, Giancarlo Esposito, Barry Pepper, and a slew of females absent from the pretty-much-boys-only The Maze Runner. While things might seem stable at first, soon the MazeBoyz (how I would refer to the cast of The Maze Runner if I had a Tumblr) learn their new hosts hide some nefarious truths.

The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials will be released September 18th, nearly a year to the day after The Maze Runner‘s September 19th, 2014 release. Check out the first trailer below:

Michael Fassbender is ‘Steve Jobs’ in New Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/michael-fassbender-is-steve-jobs/ http://waytooindie.com/news/michael-fassbender-is-steve-jobs/#comments Mon, 18 May 2015 15:43:56 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=36235 Michael Fassbender aims to portray the visionary Steve Jobs in Danny Boyle's upcoming biopic, we just hope it's better than Ashton Kutcher's from two years ago.]]>

Every since the passing of Apple founder Steve Jobs, a whole slew of movies have set themselves in motion in an attempt to capture some of the magic of the man himself. Only two seem to have come to fruition (not counting the 2013 Funny or Die satire). The first of those two, Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher, popped up in 2013 to mostly horrible reviews and failed to make any lasting impressions. This year brings the second, and much more promising, Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs looks to have a more contained plot than Jobs, with the film taking place backstage at three iconic product launches, crescendoing to the 1998 release of the iMac.

Written by walk-n-talk godfather (and Oscar winner) Aaron Sorkin and directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle, Steve Jobs stars the never-hotter Michael Fassbender as the iconic CEO. Supporting Fassy is a great cast: Kate Winslet as Joanna Hoffman, Seth Rogan as Steve Wozniak, and Jeff Daniels as John Sculley.

Steve Jobs arrives in the Oscar friendly slot of October 9th. Check out the first teaser for the film below.

‘Rosewood’ Basically Looks Like ‘Dexter’ Without the Interesting Parts http://waytooindie.com/news/rosewood-looks-like-dexter/ http://waytooindie.com/news/rosewood-looks-like-dexter/#respond Tue, 12 May 2015 13:44:32 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=36055 New fall TV show Rosewood looks to be an uninteresting version of Dexter.]]>

Morris Chestnut is one of those actors that’s seemingly elevated himself to leading man status through perseverance-based ubiquity and not any particular breakthrough role. Show his headshot to a collection of five friends and you’re bound to get five completely separate “he’s the guy from” answers whether it’s Boyz n the Hood, American Horror Story, Nurse Jackie, or Kick-Ass 1 and 2. For me, Chestnut always be NBA star Tracy Reynolds, surrogate father to a preteen Lil’ Bow Wow in the magical-basketball-skills-derived-from-lightning-strike classic Like Mike. Reynolds may have had a killer jumper, but his most clutch shot was being the dad Calvin always needed.

Anyway, Chestnut’s landed the lead in one of the new FOX shows unveiled at the network’s upfronts presentation. Rosewood is a Miami-set procedural that exists in the undefined space between Bones and Dexter, just without the distinctive hooks that both those shows had. As pathologist and medical examiner Dr. Beaumont Rosewood, Jr., Chestnut outperforms his job description by charming a crime scene until he uncovers a clue. Alongside the department’s newest detective (who is, shockingly, a woman), Rosewood rides on speedboats and gives dap to suspects in the pursuit of crime solving.

Rosewood is slated to air Wednesdays this Fall on FOX, watch the trailer for the new show, from Psych co-executive producer Todd Harthan, below:

Seth MacFarlane’s Not Finished Dominating Fox Animation with ‘Bordertown’ http://waytooindie.com/news/seth-macfarlane-fox-animation-bordertown/ http://waytooindie.com/news/seth-macfarlane-fox-animation-bordertown/#respond Tue, 12 May 2015 13:35:44 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=36060 Fox's Animation Domination will be getting a new show in its lineup from Seth MacFarlane.]]>

With The Cleveland Show cancelled and American Dad having moved on to the quieter pastures of TBS, Seth MacFarlane’s stranglehold on FOX’s “Sunday Funday” lineup had seemingly loosened just a bit. Fear not Peter Griffin fans, for the first trailer for Bordertown has arrived to fill that crass hole in your heart. Featuring the voice talents of Hank Azaria, Alex Bornstein, Miss Pyle, Judah Friedlander and Efren Ramirez, Bordertown takes place in the fictional Southwestern town of Mexifornia. Family Guy scribe Mark Hentemann runs the upcoming show alongside MacFarlane.

Despite the slightly cruder character designs of Bordertown, the animation style and general sense of humor feels right in line with other Seth MacFarlane productions. Each voice sounds goofily exaggerated with the voice actors leaning heavily into their adopted accents. Given MacFarlane’s Family Guy background, one can expect a nuanced, thoughtful but clever examination of the cultural and socioeconomic issues surrounding the immigration debate. Nah, just kidding, but check out the trailer below to watch a guy eat a burrito then blow fire out of his mouth and butt!

Bordertown will air its 13-episode first season early in 2016 on FOX.

‘Vacation’ Re-boot Starring Ed Helms Gets a Red Band Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/vacation-re-boot-starring-ed-helms-gets-a-red-brand-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/vacation-re-boot-starring-ed-helms-gets-a-red-brand-trailer/#respond Thu, 07 May 2015 19:41:22 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=35898 We're hoping the final product is better than this first look at the Vacation re-boot starring Ed Helms.]]>

Ed Helms has struck comedy gold. He’s done it on the small screen (The Office) and the big (Hangover), and while his name recognition is fairly high, he has yet to cement any sort of leading man status. This has left him to pick up slack in some pretty dreary films (we’re looking mostly at you, We’re The Millers). But now he’s getting a crack at leading his own ensemble in Vacation, a re-boot of the National Lampoon classic.

From the looks of the first trailer, Vacation promises a pretty straight forward plot to make room for the hijinks that are sure to come: Rusty Griswold (Helms) is all grown up and looking to recreate some of the good ol’ family bonding time that his father, Clark (once again reprised by Chevy Chase) managed to create on their long-past road trip to the infamous Walley World.

Vacation is the directorial debut of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (the writing duo behind Horrible Bosses and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone), which is reason enough to instill some hesitation. But hopefully the stacked supporting cast behind Helms and Chase will make up for it: Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann, Chris Hemsworth, Charlie Day, Nick Kroll, Keegan-Michael Key and many others are promised to pop up.

So, while we’ve never heard anyone out in the streets calling for more Griswold films, it’s a property with some potentially pre-established fans. And if the first red band trailer is any indication, it doesn’t look to change up the formula too much. We do like Helms, so we’d love to see this surprise us. Vacation hits the road on July 31st.

Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes in New Trailer for ‘Mr. Holmes’ http://waytooindie.com/news/ian-mckellen-as-sherlock-holmes-in-new-trailer-for-mr-holmes/ http://waytooindie.com/news/ian-mckellen-as-sherlock-holmes-in-new-trailer-for-mr-holmes/#respond Tue, 05 May 2015 17:00:03 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=35745 Following its Berlin premiere, Mr. Holmes has a new official trailer featuring Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes.]]>

Sherlock Holmes is a character that people (at least filmmakers) can’t seem to get enough of. He’s everywhere these days, on big screen and on television. And while those movies and shows vary widely in their scope and story, one thing they all have in common is that the detective they depict is in his prime. But all that is set to change with this summer’s Mr. Holmes.

Mr. Holmes looks to focus on the super sleuth in his twilight years as he spends his days tending to his bees, alone but for the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger. Before long Roger and Holmes team up as they revisit the circumstances of his final unsolved case, all while Holmes grapples one last time with the mysteries of life and love.

The great Ian McKellen takes up the lead role in the Bill Condon directed film (hopefully more Dreamgirls than Twilight), and was written by Jeffrey Hatcher. The film premiered at Berlin 2015 to a hefty heap of praise and the official trailer shows off some incredible cinematography, so it’s safe to safe we’re excited for this one.

Check out Mr. Holmes on July 17th.

Joaquin Phoenix is an ‘Irrational Man’ in First Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/joaquin-phoenix-is-an-irrational-man-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/joaquin-phoenix-is-an-irrational-man-trailer/#respond Wed, 29 Apr 2015 17:37:45 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=35511 Woody Allen's newest film Irrational Man stars Joaquin Phoenix falling in love with Emma Stone.]]>

Woody Allen‘s summer movie has become an annual event. For well over two decades the writer/director has pumped out a film a year from his shoebox of notes–his work ethic has to be admired. But he’s always been hit or miss, and lately the pattern has seen something good pop up every other year (two years ago we got Blue Jasmine, two years before that Midnight In Paris, between those films we got the forgettable When In Rome and the harmless Magic In The Moonlight). So, the question is, will Allen stick to that formula and give us something noteworthy this year?

Irrational Man surely has potential. The film is led by the excellent pairing of Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, which is more than enough to put tickets in our hands. The always great Phoenix has been on something of a tear of late with his odd ball roles in Her and Inherent ViceIrrational Man looks to keep up the same sort of wacky/serious vibe.

Like most Allen films, the plot details are scarce: Irrational Man follows a philosophy professor (Phoenix) in the midst of an existential crisis who falls for a student (Stone). As per usual, the film was written and directed by Allen himself (he trusts no one). The small cast is rounded out by Jamie Blackley (If I Stay) and Parker Posey(Grace Of Monaco).

Irrational Man opens July 24th. Check out the very Woody Allen-esque first trailer below.

Johnny Depp Goes to ‘Black Mass’ in First Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/johnny-depp-black-mass-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/johnny-depp-black-mass-trailer/#respond Fri, 24 Apr 2015 13:07:02 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=35188 Could this ultra-violent mobster movie turn around Johnny Depp's career?]]>

Johnny Depp has fallen into a bit of a schtick. Since the debut of Captain Jack Sparrow in 2003, Depp has been seemingly happy to suit up in a heavy disguise, lather on a thick accent, and play the loon—to both diminishing returns and larger paychecks (see: three Pirates films with more on the way, Alice in Wonderland, The Lone Ranger, etc.). And, while it’s hard to not be exhausted by the trope, it might not be so bad if his other roles didn’t seem to be getting so lazy (see specifically: last year’s Mortdecai). After all, we did love the guy at one time.

Today, hope seems to be on the way, in the form of the first trailer for September’s anticipated Black Mass. The true crime film will see Depp put on the heavy makeup of the notorious mob boss Whitey Bulger. Black Mass tells the true story of Bulger, the ultra-violent South Boston mobster, who just happens to have a State Senator for a brother, and who just happens to be a long-time FBI informant.

Scott Cooper sat behind the camera on this one, and after 2013’s bust Out of the Furnace, the hope is that he can return to the form of his excellent debut (Crazy Horse). After all, the cast here is tremendous: Benedict Cumberbatch (as Whitey’s Senator brother), Dakota Johnson, Joel Edgerton, Corey Stoll, and Juno Temple.

Based on the first trailer, and all the talent involved, and considering that when Depp is good, he can be one of the best, things are looking pretty good. Head to Black Mass on September 18th.

Just in time for its Earth Day release, the trailer for the upcoming documentary Planetary has arrived. Complete with beautiful cinematography, the film’s trailer prepares audiences for a thought-provoking journey across the Earth.

In a stunning visual exploration, the film interweaves imagery from NASA Apollo missions with visions of the Milky Way, Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas, and the cacophonous sounds of downtown Tokyo and Manhattan, with intimate interviews from renowned experts who shed new light on the ways our worldview is profoundly affecting life on our planet. A provocative and breathtaking wakeup call, Planetary is a poetic and humbling reminder that it’s time to shift our perspective. The film asks us to rethink who we really are, to reconsider our relationship with ourselves, each other and the world around us—to remember that: we are Planetary.

The film was directed by Guy Reid, who previously directed the award-winning documentary short Overview.

Planetary arrives to Vimeo on Earth Day (April 22nd) through Abramorama and SHFT.com. For more information, visit the film’s official website or Facebook page.

‘Jurassic World’ Global Trailer Arrives http://waytooindie.com/news/jurassic-world-global-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/jurassic-world-global-trailer/#respond Mon, 20 Apr 2015 16:15:52 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=34810 Highly-anticipated summer film Jurassic World releases a full-length trailer.]]>

Jurassic World is one of the mostly highly-anticipated films of the summer, and if the first trailer wasn’t enough to get you excited, the new global one undoubtedly is. Filled with more dinosaurs, more action, and more suspense, if the new trailer is an indication of what’s to come, Jurassic World could very well be exactly what fans of the series have been waiting for.

Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor’s interest, which backfires horribly.

Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy and Judy Greer.

Jurassic World arrives in theaters on June 12th.

‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Trailer Debuts http://waytooindie.com/news/batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice-trailer-debuts/ http://waytooindie.com/news/batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice-trailer-debuts/#respond Sat, 18 Apr 2015 01:30:50 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=34720 Burly Bat-fleck is out for blood.]]>

In reaction to a leak to file-sharing sites on Thursday, Warner Bros. released the official HD version of the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer Friday afternoon.

Though it frankly isn’t the most exciting thing in the world (it’s pretty dour, actually), the trailer drops some significant clues regarding the film’s central conflict, which is likely ignited by the cataclysmic battle that capped off Man of Steel. The world seems divided on the hot topic of the red and blue alien from Krypton, some christening him a savior, others renouncing him as an untrustworthy totalitarian.

In a sonic collage of Superman-related sound bytes, we hear the voices of real-life figures outlining the implications of the hero’s existence, Neil Degrasse Tyson being the most notable of all. “We’re talking about an alien whose very existence challenges our own sense of priority in the universe.”

Though Clark probably isn’t comfortable atop the messianic pedestal the world’s put him on, he nonetheless appears to have most of the world groveling at his feet. There are clearly dissenters, though, as is evidenced by the shot of a statue of Superman at the beginning of the trailer, the words “FALSE GOD” painted across his chest by non-believers.

The biggest non-believer of them all, it seems, is Bruce Wayne, played by Ben Affleck. We get a good look of Bat-fleck in the Bat-suit (glowing eyes and all) near the end of the trailer as he stares up defiantly at Henry Cavill‘s Superman, hovering overhead in the middle of a lightning storm. It all looks epic and badass as hell, but you know what? The Man of Steel trailer looked awesome, too. So…maybe we should take a cue from Larry David and curb our enthusiasm.

In the comics, the reason Batman would often best Superman when they did battle pertained to their moral make-up: Clark Kent is a good person; Bruce Wayne is not. Clark, knowing he could crush Bruce with his pinky, holds back his punches, while Ol’ Bruce-y is never above cheating (i.e. shoving Kryptonite shanks into Clark’s ribcage) to gain an advantage. It’ll be interesting (nerve-racking) to see how director Zack Snyder plays with this dynamic. “Tell me, do you bleed?” Batman threatens near the trailer’s end. “You will,” he promises. Sounds good to me.

We’ve still seen little to nothing of the rest of the super-powered and super-evil ensemble cast, including Gal Gadot‘s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa‘s Aquaman, Ezra Miller‘s Flash, Ray Fisher‘s Cyborg, and Jesse Eisenberg‘s Lex Luthor, though I’m willing to bet we’ll get a good look at them in the coming months. Until then, we’ll just have to wait until the film arrives on March 25th, 2016 to see how in the hell they’re going to cram introductions to all these gigantic heroes in one itty bitty movie. Check out the trailer below.

Guy Pearce and Cobie Smulders get ‘Results’ http://waytooindie.com/news/guy-pearce-and-cobie-smulders-get-results/ http://waytooindie.com/news/guy-pearce-and-cobie-smulders-get-results/#respond Wed, 15 Apr 2015 17:03:53 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=34511 New trailer for mumblecore veteran Andrew Bujalski's Sundance hit Results.]]>

Guy Pearce is awesome. When he shows up, we show up, ticket in hand. Even in the smallest roles he has a way of breathing a little something special into the picture, whether it be falling apart around him or a good film he’s just made great (must-sees include: Animal Kingdom and The Rover). Cobie Smulders, on another hand, is something of an unknown factor. How I Met Your Mother was never too good, and never truly terrible, but the role didn’t give her much to work with. And neither has her work in the Marvel universe. Both of these factors are just two of the reasons to take a look at the new trailer for the Sundance 2015 hit, Results.

The log line for Results is rather simple: the film follows Kat (Smulders) and Trevor (Pearce), two personal trainers who get caught up in the messy life of new-client Danny (Kevin Corrigan). Ideally, humor, maturing, and something heartfelt follow.

Written and directed by Andrew Bujalski (the “godfather of mumblecore”: Funny Ha Ha and Mutual Appreciation), Results is his first foray into the territory of professional actors–a trick that’s brought endless returns for other mumblecore vets. Joining the three principals are Brooklyn Decker, Giovanni Ribisi, and Anthony Michael Hall.

The word out of Sundance was quiet, but positive, so count us in. Results arrives May 29th.

New Full Size Trailer for ‘Ant-Man’ has Arrived http://waytooindie.com/news/new-trailer-for-ant-man/ http://waytooindie.com/news/new-trailer-for-ant-man/#respond Mon, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=34074 Marvel's upcoming Ant-Man starring Paul Rudd receives a full sized trailer.]]>

Right about now, a few short weeks away from the premiere of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, it’s pretty easy to forget that Marvel‘s got another movie cooking for release this summer in the form of Ant-Man. The film is set to drop July 17th and the second full trailer has arrived (though the first consisted mostly of a voiceover from Michael Douglas, so might as well consider this the first real one).

While most of the plot details are being kept under wraps, what we do know is that Ant-Man follows Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), a reformed small time crook, who falls under the mentorship of Hank Pym (Douglas). To save the wildly powerful Ant-Man suit, Lang must put his thieving skills back to work and pull off an impossible heist, all while the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

After all the drama with Edgar Wright finally settled, Adam McKay punched up the script, and Payton Reed (The Break-Up, Yes Man) stepped in to direct. Rudd’s supporting cast is pretty top-notch: Judy Greer, Hayley Atwell, John Slattery, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Pena, and Corey Stroll as Darren Cross/Yellowjacket.

So, there are a ton of questions left unresolved here (most of them being in the vein of, how great would Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man have been?), but Rudd is a lot of fun with the right material, and this trailer shows that he’s been given some room to breathe and be Paul Rudd. And, while this Ant-Man might be a more vanilla, more paint-by-numbers-Marvel-movie than the dream version could have been, we’ll be lining up July 17th to watch two tiny guys fight on a model train set.

One of the year’s most anticipated films has received its first trailer. Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and written by Jesse Andrews (based on his novel), Me and Earl and the Dying Girl takes on the quickly cliche story of a teenager who befriends a girl with cancer.

Winner of both the Grand Jury and Audience Awards at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl joined recent hits Whiplash and Fruitvale Station for that honor. The last film to win the Sundance Grand Jury prize and fail to receive a Best Picture nomination was 2011’s Like Crazy. If the rave reviews coming out of the festival weren’t enough on their own, this is a good trend for the indie.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is set to be released by Fox Searchlight on June 12. Check out the trailer below!

Nystagmus is a disease that you probably haven’t heard of. But the rare eye disorder–coupled with glaucoma–is the jumping off point for the new mother/son relationship drama, Flutter.

The film follows JoLynn (Lindsay Pulsipher of True Blood), a young, semi-single mother struggling to raise her son, Johnathan (Johnathan Huth Jr.), a sea monster-obsessed nine-year-old with a pair of rare eye disorders. To relieve her son of his pain, JoLynn grows and cooks marijuana into edible “medicine.” To take things from bad to worse, JoLynn’s in-laws decide that they can care for Johnathan better and attempt to seek custody.

Written and directed by first-timer Eric Hueber, Flutter is rounded out by several Friday Night Lights alums: Glenn Morshower, Jesse Plemons, and Brad Leland.

The film hits digital and on demand on April 7, and to tide you over until then, we have an exclusive clip that highlights JoLynn’s resigned determination to care for her son her own way.

Get Ready for ‘The D Train’ in First Trailer http://waytooindie.com/news/get-ready-for-the-d-train-in-first-trailer/ http://waytooindie.com/news/get-ready-for-the-d-train-in-first-trailer/#respond Mon, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=33569 Jack Black schemes up a way to increase attendance to his high school reunion in his newest comedy 'The D Train']]>

Jack Black is one of the most hit and miss actors working today. Without a doubt he can knock it out of the park, in both hilarious supporting roles and serious leads. But for every Bernie there is a Gullivers Travels. Still, there is something about his manic energy that lends his every role a certain watchability.

For his first big headliner of 2015, Black is hopping on The D Train, a comedy that popped up at Sundance and sees its first trailer debut today.

The D Train stars Black as Dan, a perpetually uncool dude struggling to put together the perfect high school reunion, only to find that no one wants to show. His solution might just lie with his polar opposite, Oliver Lawless (James Marsden), the face of a national commercial. But when Lawless agrees to return home for the reunion, Dan watches his life get quickly taken over by his new pal.

Written and directed by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul (the writing duo behind Yes Man), the film co-stars the ever-hilarious Kathryn Hahn (She’s Funny That Way, Parks and Rec) and Jeffery Tambor (Arrested Development, Transparent).

So far The D Train has chalked up mixed buzz, but the Black/Marsden team up holds a lot of potential. Check out the trailer below.

When Kevin Smith brought Clerks to Sundance 1994, it helped birth a wave of low budget, independent filmmaking. It also birthed the career of Kevin Smith, which since then has lead to very mixed results. Smith’s story proved fertile enough to compel writer/director Christopher Downie to make Shooting Clerks, the story of how Kevin Smith bravely… shot Clerks.

The project’s origins can be traced back a little over a year to this failed IndieGoGo campaign; however, since then the film appears to have been made with the participation of some familiar Kevin Smith faces. The trailer embedded below features most of the main players from Smith’s Clerks film recreated for a faux behind-the-scenes montage. Paying close attention, you can spot Comic Book Men‘s Mike Zapcic and The Angry Video Game Nerd‘s James Rolfe among the faces, but reportedly the man himself, Kevin Smith, will cameo as a newspaper reporter, and provide narration for the film.
