The decision wasn’t easy, but after 6 years of operation Way Too Indie will be taking its final bow. We all feel proud of what we were able to accomplish over the years. The site allowed us to travel the world, meet amazing people, attend top-notch film festivals, and be part of film societies—all while doing the thing we all love; watching and discussing film.

More and more lately, it seems like film criticism websites are slowly disappearing in a space that was once crowded but now starting to consolidate. Way Too Indie shared many of the same difficulties as those other publications; readership numbers, financial reasons (though we were always realistic about this—after all, we were running an independent film site), and life itself. Film criticism is still a vital part of the art form, and hopefully it will continue to be relevant indefinitely.

Way Too Indie meant a lot to us and hopefully to some of you as well. I’d like to personally thank our readers and our crazy talented staff. Several of our writers have already found new outlets to write for, so I’m happy that Way Too Indie was able to help in that way. The site wouldn’t be where it is today without the help from our amazing staff. And thanks to the countless other critics, colleagues, and publications who helped and inspired us along the way.

Way Too Indie has been, and always will be, an amazing chapter in my life. So I thank you all for being a part of it. I encourage everyone to continue seeking out small independent films, because the volume of a voice shouldn’t determine the importance of the words.

Way Too Indie Turns 5! http://waytooindie.com/news/way-too-indie-turns-5/ http://waytooindie.com/news/way-too-indie-turns-5/#comments Mon, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://waytooindie.com/?p=31442 It's our birthday! Five years of Way Too Indie!]]>

Happy Anniversary to us!

Five years ago, Way Too Indie was just a one-man blog where I sporadically expressed my love for independent cinema. And I mean sporadically. If I was feeling particularly ambitious, I’d manage to write a few reviews a month. Over the years we’ve assembled an indispensably talented group of writers and editors from Los Angeles to London, each bringing their own unique perspective on film criticism. Writing for the site has allowed us to explore foreign lands by covering film festivals such as Cannes, TIFF, Sundance London, and SXSW. Now, we pride ourselves on covering as many indie films as possible. What started out as just a simple film review site has now expanded into a comprehensive source of reviews, news, interviews, and editorials for not just film, but music, and soon television as well. Although we’ve come a long way since our inception, our commitment to champion the underdogs of entertainment remains unaltered. Our primary focus for the site has been, and will always be, with an independent voice.

As our coverage and content has increased in both frequency and quality, so has the look of our site. We rolled out an all new layout in October and we pride ourselves on showcasing our news in as sleek and professional a manner. Along with this new layout, we increased our staff and revved up our efforts in providing insightful features, not only the indie film and music communities, but to those needing an introduction to a world of art and entertainment they may have overlooked.

While five is hardly all that mature, we’re excited to be in a place where we know where our passions lie and have a solid voice and a firm rock of great writers and trustworthy content. But we are still young and not afraid to be bold and imaginative with our choices. We hope you’ll stick with us and see just how far we can go. And if there’s content you want and don’t see, let us know, we’re nothing without our readers.

Long live indie!
