The real-life story of James “Whitey” Bulger, the South Boston crime boss who acted as a protected FBI informant for years until the arrangement imploded, is one of the most bizarre, once-in-a-lifetime stories you’re likely to hear. Black Mass, directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy HeartOut of the Furnace) and starring Johnny Depp as the murderous Mr. Bulger, isn’t quite as rarified; Depp acts harder and better than he has in many years, but other than his performance, the film isn’t anything special. Cooper and writers Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth use familiar tropes from the mob-movie lexicon to make the story palatable to wide audiences, and in doing so strip the story of all its strangeness.

Aside from that minor tragedy, the film actually works very well. Goodfellas and The Departed are great movies, so the fact that Cooper so blatantly borrows from them isn’t so much offensive as it is uninspired, and at the end of the day, he’s crafted an effective movie. We follow Bulger’s rise from general small-time crime lord to over-powered, FBI-protected kingpin and, eventually, man on the run. Catapulting him from low-level extortion and drug deals to Southie (and beyond) dominance is a deal he strikes with an old childhood friend, John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), who now works for the FBI. As long as Whitey helps the feds take down other, bigger crime organizations, he and his gang will be free to run amok and expand their empire, given he doesn’t kill anyone in doing so (good luck with that). Making things even stickier, his brother, Billy (Benedict Cumberbatch, struggling with an awful Boston accent), is one of the most prominent politicians in the state.

The true-crime story revolves around Bulger and the demons that tormented him and compel him to become the thing he hates most—a snitch, a rat, a sell-out. Arguably the biggest contributing factor is the tragic death of his young son, whose mother (Dakota Johnson) never looks at Bulger the same again. With his family crumbling around him, his humanity begins to twist and melt away until he’s nothing more than a merciless overlord with a thirst for vengeful dominance.

Depp’s performance is gravitational, drawing everything in from us to the other actors. All converges on the blue-eyed, murderous bastard, and Depp more than bears the load with his best on-screen effort in who knows how long. He’s a damn good actor, and god knows we needed a reminder of that. He plays Bulger as a terrifying, calculating, unpredictable killer who always seems one step ahead of everyone, including us. His poker face is impenetrable, and we’re left breathlessly anticipating when he’ll strike next and dispatch of his next victim with his gruesome handiwork. Depp’s make-up walks the line between frightening and distracting, but he more often than not nudges the effect to the side of the former.

Tension rises as Connolly scrambles to protect Bulger and keep the deal intact, weaseling his way out of tight spots (like when Bulger is the prime suspect in a high-profile out-of-state murder) and wiping sweat off of his brow with every close call. Edgerton’s Napoleonic braggadocio is very funny, lending a frantic comedic flavor to an otherwise deathly affair. The rest of the FBI and Southie gang crews are filled out by a stacked line-up of actors, from Kevin Bacon and Corey Stoll as Connolly’s skeptical superiors, to Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard, and W. Earl Brown as Bulger’s colorful, heavy-fisted underlings.

What threatens to yank us away from the tight grip of Depp’s performance is the material, which is never wholly original and is downright second-rate when it practices mob-movie mimicry. One moment sees Bulger breaking bread with Connolly and one of his FBI partners, John Morris (David Harbour). Bulger asks John to give up the family-secret recipe for the delicious marinade he bathed their steaks in and, in a mild panic, John lets him in on the secret ingredients. The mood turns icy cold when Bulger asks how he could ever trust someone who would divulge a family secret so easily. Nobody’s laughing, and the room is filled with nervous energy. It’s Joe Pesci’s “Do I amuse you?” speech in Goodfellas, but only half as effective. It’s almost as if Cooper felt he needed to outfit Bulger with mob clichés in order for the movie to work. A more idiosyncratic approach may have allowed Depp to reach greater heights.

After an impressive first season, that not only drew from its 1996 film origin but added elaborate depth and sustained an intriguing and comedic noir, FX’s Fargo is finally giving us an in-depth glimpse at season two.

A few things we already knew: Season two is set in 1979 in Luverne, MN and Sioux Falls, SD (a town near and dear to this website) and revolves around a case mentioned a few times in the first season. Following their established knack for an elaborate and well-rounded ensemble, the faces featured in season two’s trailer show just what a punch this next season is likely to pack. Patrick Wilson and Ted Danson are the lead law enforcement characters, trying to solve a murder that appears to include connections with what amounts to the perfect Hollywood Midwestern barbeque guest list: Jean Smart, Kieran CulkinNick OffermanJesse Plemons, Kirsten DunstBokeem Woodbine, Jeffrey Donovan, Cristin Milioti and we didn’t even get a glimpse of Bruce Campbell yet!

The ’70s references are abundant, starting off with a Watergate joke and tying in with Dunst’s character showing an interest in ’70s cult-like New Age training program, Lifespring. Dunst always did look pretty great with feathered hair.

The trailer is plenty promising with what looks like all the same dark humor and as much if not more of the twisty murder mystery we came to crave from season one. The only downside? Because FX took their time renewing the show after season one, we have to wait until October before we get to watch. But with all that snow, it might just make for a more fitting viewing experience.

Nystagmus is a disease that you probably haven’t heard of. But the rare eye disorder–coupled with glaucoma–is the jumping off point for the new mother/son relationship drama, Flutter.

The film follows JoLynn (Lindsay Pulsipher of True Blood), a young, semi-single mother struggling to raise her son, Johnathan (Johnathan Huth Jr.), a sea monster-obsessed nine-year-old with a pair of rare eye disorders. To relieve her son of his pain, JoLynn grows and cooks marijuana into edible “medicine.” To take things from bad to worse, JoLynn’s in-laws decide that they can care for Johnathan better and attempt to seek custody.

Written and directed by first-timer Eric Hueber, Flutter is rounded out by several Friday Night Lights alums: Glenn Morshower, Jesse Plemons, and Brad Leland.

The film hits digital and on demand on April 7, and to tide you over until then, we have an exclusive clip that highlights JoLynn’s resigned determination to care for her son her own way.

The Mill Valley Rush

The Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center was packed again after yesterday’s tribute to Costa Gavras, this time to pay homage to beloved Australian actor Geoffrey Rush. Back in 1996, when Shine–one of Rush’s first feature roles and one that won him an Oscar for best actor in 1997–premiered in the United States at Sundance, but Rush wasn’t in attendance. When the film screened at the Mill Valley film festival, however, he was all too happy to fly out to the Bay Area to make an appearance. Last night, in front of hundreds of Rush’s admirers and friends, Zoe Elton, MVFF’s director of programming, shared with Rush that a few of the staffers at the festival remember him visiting the “2AM Club”–one of Mill Valley’s oldest bars–after the screening of Shine. “I have no memory of this,” Rush replied, with the same charmingly dry wit he’s infused into so many of his roles over the years, drawing a wave of laughter from the crowd (including yours truly).

The Mill Valley Award was presented to Rush by esteemed director Philip Kaufman, who admitted he had a bit of stage fright prior to taking the theater stage, not because he was afraid of public speaking, but because he was to be followed by the enchanting Mr. Rush. As Rush joined him onstage, it was clear what Kaufman meant by the compliment–Rush’s personality is as magnetic in person as it is on screen. He speaks with his hands, exhibits a keen sense of humor, and exudes class with his low, round timbre. During the Q&A mediated by Elton, the two revisited Rush’s illustrious film career, in which he’s played every type of role imaginable, from eccentrics like Captain Barbosa (Pirates of the Caribbean), The Marquis de Sade (Quills), and Casanova Frankenstein (Mystery Men), to his powerful turns as Leon Trotsky (Frida), Philip Henslowe (Shakespeare in Love), and, of course, pianist David Helfgott in Shine.

Rush recalled his mindset at the time of Shine‘s American release, when he was still quite active in the theater in Australia. “I reached a point where I thought, whatever happens to  Shine–and it was an interesting journey for me to come to America and Mill Valley–I can always go back to a solid career in the theater.” Luckily for all of us, Shine did amazingly well here in the States, and we’ve been gifted some of the most unforgettable performances by one of the great actors of the past 20 years.

Anti-Bullying Message Delivered by Teen Dream Messengers

Earlier in the day, the cast and director of anti-bullying high school drama Contest were met at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center by a mob of adoring kids, eager to get autographs from the photogenic teen stars. The actors were all smiles as they posed for pictures, gave out big hugs, and chatted with the youngsters, all in the name of promoting the film’s anti-bullying message. “It’s about a high school kid who is a talented chef and has been bullied for three years by a jock,” director Anthony Giuda says of the film. “The two are forced to work on a project together, and though they’re reluctant to work together at first, they gradually form a friendship.”

Beautiful young actress Katherine McNamara plays the new kid in school. “I’m a bystander of the bullying situation. I’m the new girl in town, so I have a more objective view of things and can see through most of the games being played.” McNamara explained that the film “addresses every kind of bullying, from at school, to outside of school, cyber-bullying, bullying between siblings…everything is covered.” According to Giunta, the film has been received well by kids who’ve seen it, and the message is getting across loud and clear. “People gravitate toward this movie and think it’s going to help a lot of people.” The films airs Tonight at 6pm ET/PT on Cartoon Network.

Rescuing the King of the Jungle

Actress Jorja Fox, best known for her role as Sara Sidle on CSI, and directer Tim Phillips were on hand in Mill Valley with their new documentary, Lion Ark, following a team of animal activists trying to save lions from circus runners in Bolivia keeping them in captivity illegally. Film subject and President of Animal Defenders International, Jan Creamer, was also in attendance to introduce the film, which has generated quite a bit of buzz at the festival for its thrilling narrative storytelling and its fascinating interviews and footage.

At Sweetwater

Just down the street from the Lion Ark screening, at Sweetwater Music Hall (a tiny, historic night club with a long legacy), a smaller, more intimate crowd was gathered to listen to gorgeous songs played by young female talents. The nightclub–which for over 40 years hosted the likes of Carlos Santana, Bob Weir (who’s an investor of the venue), and Elvis Costello among many others–is a historical live music staple of Marin County with state-of-the-art sound (it really does sound great) and gourmet food.

Lily Kershaw, a 22-year-old folk songwriter with a smoky, tender, smooth-as-butter voice, played an intimate set of rich, well-crafted songs that had the club entranced. Her song “Promised Land” was a highlight, a song that begins with the line “I gave you my body”, which makes it all the more hilarious that it’s a favorite of Kershaw’s grandfather, which she revealed in the song’s introduction.

Following Kershaw, Jazz Mills of the band “Cowboy and Indian” took the stage and was supposed to be joined on stage by her fellow bandmate, actor Jesse Plemons of Breaking Bad and Friday Night Lights fame, but he had to miss the show because, well, his acting career is blowing up at the moment. Much to my surprise and delight, Plemoms was replaced by his Friday Night Lights co-star, Stephanie Hunt, who was a fellow member with him in the show’s fictional rock band “Crucifictorious”. As a big FNL fan, I could barely contain my excitement, though I thankfully was able to gather myself and keep composure. The impromptu duo of Mills and Hunt (whose voices melded together beautifully) came to the venue without a name, though they claimed that the band name was still “up for grabs”. Hmm…”Up For Grabs” would be a great band name…

It has been less than a month since the movie lords graced us with a first glimpse of P.T. Anderson’s newest film, The Master. But it was literally just a glimpse as it served more as a teaser clip than a full blown trailer. Today we have been blessed with the second teaser clip for The Master, which comes in at about the same runtime of a minute and a half.

Absent in the teaser was title character Philip Seymour Hoffman, who finally makes an appearance here as the charismatic leader known as “The Master” whose religion is about to take off in America. Joaquin Phoenix, a troubled ex-Navy man, becomes his right-hand man.

We will still have to wait for the full trailer to be released but this certainly wets our appetite for what will hopefully be P.T. Anderson’s next masterpiece. The Master will be released in theaters on October 12th.
