The Big Year
While watching The Big Year I was both disappointed and pleasantly surprised. The disappointment was, with comedy superstars such as Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson, that it wasn’t as funny as I had anticipated it would be. The pleasant surprise was that it still turned out to be a very good movie. |

50/50
The name of the film comes from when Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) finds out his odds of survival are 50/50 after finding out he has spinal cancer. The film was written by Will Reiser, who was actually diagnosed with spinal cancer in real life, which is what undoubtedly helped it feel so genuine. The focus of the film is to show how cancer can affect more than just the person with it but also the people around them. It does that surprisingly well. |

Win Win
Win Win is an indie drama from Thomas McCarthy whose third film proves he knows how to write genuine human behavior. Although there are some similarities between his other films, Win Win should appeal to a wider audience with this simple but sweet film about family. |

Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids is a comedy that shares some similarities to The Hangover aside from just Ed Helms, who seems a lot like Steve Carell in The 40 Year Old Virgin. It is about a man who must come out of his shell to stand up for what he believes is the right thing to do. Always raunchy, often funny, but rarely more than bland. |

Coup de Cinema
Coup de Cinema is an indie low budget film about low budget indie filmmaking. Co-directors Austin Hillebrecht and Sean Parker made a fantastically original film about an inspired filmmaker who believes he can turn the production of a bad film into a good one. Coup de Cinema was shot in Portland and many of the actors were locals. It was very creative and funny and at times it did not even take itself very serious, which worked well. |

Little Blue Pill
Aaron Godfred’s feature film debut, Little Blue Pill, is a raunchy indie comedy about a young man who accidentally takes Viagra like pills and experiences all the side-effects that comes with them. The plot is both simple and ridiculous yet somehow manages to keep you entertained throughout. It is full of laughs; just do not watch this with your grandma. |

Heavy Times
Heavy Times is an indie comedy that will remind you of The Hangover and Superbad. Directed by Benjamin Mark and Ryan McKenna, it takes you on a wild joy-ride with three best friends and a loud and obnoxious brother-in-law. The characters get way outside their comfort zone and so do we. |

Greenberg
Defining what Greenberg is can be quite difficult. It is a romantic comedy without the romance and comedy. The film does so by removing the typical cheesy gimmicks as it presents itself in a more real life way. There is humor in everyday situations, as this film shows, that are not meant to be funny but to someone watching, it is. |

Wonderful World
Wonderful World is an indie drama that stars Matthew Broderick in a role that is not what most people are used to seeing him in. It’s a directorial debut for Joshua Goldin but it is not the first time Goldin and Broderick have a film in common with one another. Goldin wrote Out on a Limb which Broderick stared in. This film is not the most put-together film but the writing seemed solid. Maybe Goldin should stick to writing. |
