I think if you look at this series of films the way Philip Kadelbach, the director, intended it you won’t find it ducks the big question of as you put it, “Why something like Hitler and the Holocaust happened.” In an interview he says: “Man geht in den Film mit jungen Menschen, die
vom Nationalsozialismus fasziniert sind, und erlebt ihre innere Zerstörung.” Translation: “You go into the film with young people, who were fascinated by National Socialism and experience their inner destruction.” So the point of view is five 20 somethings, not adults who’ve already amassed a good deal of experience of life, holding down jobs, and raising families etc. In which case it’s not surprising that they view it as a big adventure which will be over by Christmas. Plenty of GIs who landed at the Normandy thought the war would be over in a few days or weeks. It may seem naive, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a realistic portrayal of the way people at that age approach life. It’s a big adventure. Only in this case it does turn into a nightmare.
