Agree with previous poster Preston: this is definitely a retelling of Oates’ story, and more specifically the serial killer Charles Schmid who inspired that story. Same line about “I wanted to know what it felt like,” same name of the other girl, similar lure to get the girl out to the woods, and in real life Scmidt had high school friends who kept the secret for a while.

I see some of O’Connor’s story here, notably in someone being taken to the woods and shot, but the majority of the film (down to the predator’s girlfriend’s name) comes from Joyce Carol Oates’ story “Where are you Going, Where have you Been.”
